Chinese company gives golden keys to thank employees

Instead of cash or stock bonuses, Chinese tech company Insta360 chose to give employees solid gold keys as a symbol of stability and appreciation for talent.

A Chinese technology company attracted attention when it gave its employees keycaps made of pure gold, including one weighing up to 35 grams, worth about $45,000.

Shenzhen-based Insta360, a well-known brand in the 360-degree camera industry, has maintained the tradition of giving golden keycaps to employees on the occasion of China's Programmer Day (October 24) to honor the contributions of its engineering team.

This year, Insta360 is giving away a total of 21 gold keycaps. The heaviest key is the space bar, which weighs 35.02 grams, or about 320,000 yuan ($45,000). The company has given away a total of 55 keycaps so far. The value of the prizes has more than doubled since the first year thanks to the sharp rise in gold prices.

In the Chinese tech world, Insta360 is known as the “gold factory” because of its unique bonus policy. Founder Liu Jingkang said the gift is not meant to represent material value but rather a symbol of stability. He emphasized that the company’s strength lies in its talented staff, where each keystroke is a turn of stone into gold.

Previously, on the occasion of its 10th anniversary in July, Insta360 gave all employees and interns a “blind box” containing 0.36 gram pure gold stickers, designed with many different patterns. The gift came with the message that all that glitters is not just gold, it is each person.

The company also has a tradition of giving out 1 gram pure gold coins to employees who get married or have a baby. At the most recent year-end party, the grand prize was a 50 gram 999 gold bar.

One employee shared that the gold rewards were practical and helped them manage their assets better. Another said that they collected gold items from the company through each milestone in their life, asserting that even though the price of gold has increased, they still keep it because there are things that cannot be measured in money.

On Chinese social media, many people expressed their admiration for Insta360's benefits policy. "I cannot express how jealous I am of this company's employees," one prominent user commented.
