Storm No. 13 (Kalmaegi) swept through Con Chim Ecological Area located on Thi Nai saltwater lagoon (Gia Lai province), leaving behind a scene of desolation, desolation and withering.

After the storm, hundreds of households in Vinh Quang 2 village, Tuy Phuoc Dong commune, located on an "oasis" in the Con Chim ecosystem, are still living without electricity, surrounded by mud and water.


Many households in Vinh Quang 2 village, after a night of avoiding the storm, returned home and were shocked and saddened to see their houses collapsed and empty.

Many houses lost their roofs, and were surrounded by mud and garbage.

The house was left with only bare walls after the historic storm.

Ms. Ho Thi Mai (60 years old), a resident of Vinh Quang 2 village, choked up, "In my entire life, I have never witnessed a storm as strong as storm No. 13. When the storm turned into a second anticyclone, the water level in Thi Nai lagoon rose more than 1 meter, we could only helplessly watch our property being swept away."

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Chua, 65 years old, Vinh Quang 2 village, choked up as she watched her house collapse, leaving only two walls after typhoon Kalmaegi made landfall.

Storm No. 13 left behind serious consequences not only for the lives of the people but also for the nature and ecosystem of Con Chim. Rows of mangroves, mangroves, and water coconuts that were decades old or older were blown down by the wind, becoming withered, withered, and dying.

Many bird species such as storks, herons, teals, and mallards... died in the storm, the remaining ones have lost their habitat and are scattered.

In recent days, hundreds of officers and soldiers of Division 31 stationed in Gia Lai province have actively supported people in the "oasis" of Vinh Quang 2 village to clean up, rebuild houses and overcome the consequences caused by storm No. 13.

According to Lieutenant Huynh Tran Nhat Trung, Infantry Division 31 stationed in Tuy Phuoc commune (Gia Lai), "The officers and soldiers performing their duties in Vinh Quang 2 village are all in a state of water-eaten feet and itchy rashes all over their bodies due to polluted mud and water. However, we are not afraid of difficulties and hardships to implement the "4 on-site" motto, helping people here to soon stabilize their lives."
According to the Gia Lai Agricultural Extension Center, storm No. 13 has caused severe damage to the mangrove forest in Con Chim. The total damaged forest area is up to 88.11 hectares. Of which, 24.3 hectares are completely damaged, with uprooted and broken trees; 59.51 hectares are very severely damaged, with uprooted trees, broken branches, and low recovery ability; 4.3 hectares are severely damaged, with broken trees, partially broken trunks, and can be recovered.
In addition to concentrated plantations, scattered mangrove trees also suffered serious damage. The total number of scattered trees damaged by over 70% was 5,300 trees. Of these, Thi Nai lagoon had 3,800 trees (sour tree, mangrove, nipa palm), of which about 80% were uprooted or swept away; De Gi lagoon had 1,500 trees (sea mangrove), of which about 95% were uprooted, swept away or buried in sand. The total damage to these scattered trees was estimated at 143 million VND.
