According to VNA correspondent in the Middle East-North Africa, US President Donald Trump and his entourage were welcomed by Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani upon landing at Hamad International Airport and then solemnly received at Amiri Diwan Royal Palace. The two leaders had a private meeting that lasted more than 2 hours, longer than expected.
Speaking after the talks, Sheikh Tamim assessed that the two sides had “excellent” discussions, while President Trump described the meeting as “very interesting,” in which the two sides discussed issues including Russia-Ukraine tensions, Iran and bilateral trade relations.
Observers say the conflict in the Gaza Strip is also likely to be part of the discussion between the Qatari and US leaders.
On the same day, the US President and the Emir of Qatar witnessed the signing of a joint statement on cooperation between the two governments , as well as a number of important bilateral agreements, including aviation and defense cooperation.
Most notable is the historic deal between Qatar Airways and US manufacturer Boeing. Accordingly, Qatar Airways ordered 210 wide-body aircraft, setting a new record as the largest aircraft order in Boeing's history.
Specifically, the order includes 130 787 Dreamliners, 30 777-9s, along with options to buy 50 more 787s and 777Xs, using GE Aerospace engines.
President Trump said the total value of the deal was more than $200 billion, including $160 billion for the aircraft alone. However, considering the list prices of the 777X and 787 Dreamliners, the actual value of the deal could be much lower than $200 billion.
In addition, the two countries also signed a series of defense agreements, including a letter of intent on defense cooperation, an agreement on MQ-9B unmanned aerial vehicles and the FS-LIDS unmanned aerial vehicle destruction system.
Qatar is the second stop on President Trump's first trip to the Middle East during his second term.
After Qatar, President Trump is expected to visit the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which is also the final stop on his Gulf tour to reshape strategic interests./.
