Surpassing many excellent candidates to receive the IMG Talented Student scholarship worth 150 million VND for the 2023-2024 school year, third-year student Nguyen Van Thang confided that his achievements all come from his passion for learning and clear direction for professional development.
Recently, Hanoi National University awarded the IMG Talented Student Scholarship for the 2023-2024 academic year to two outstanding students, one receiving a scholarship of 150 million VND and the other receiving a scholarship of 50 million VND. The recipient of the 150 million VND scholarship is Nguyen Van Thang, a third-year student majoring in energy engineering (University of Technology, Hanoi National University).
Nguyen Van Thang received the IMG Talented Student Scholarship for the 2023-2024 academic year from Hanoi National University, worth 150 million VND.

From failing the first choice…
Nguyen Van Thang said that he has always loved physics and has put a lot of effort into this subject since he was a student at a "village school" (Xuan Giang High School, Soc Son District, Hanoi). But according to Thang, "this effort was not very successful".
Therefore, Thang was not really confident that he would "do something" if he continued to pursue physics when he went to university. When applying for university, Thang decided to choose his first choice (NV1) to a business school. However, Thang still chose NV2 to study energy engineering at the University of Technology with the thought that, after all, it was close to his favorite subject.
In the 2021 high school graduation exam, Thang scored 27.5 points in block A00. Meanwhile, that year, Foreign Trade University (the school Thang registered for NV1) had a benchmark score of 28.25. Thang enrolled in NV2 but was still very happy, because he thought maybe it was a good thing. When he entered the energy engineering major, Thang felt that he was lucky because he failed NV1.
According to Thang, although the University of Technology "does not have a school gate" (the school is located in a building on the campus of Hanoi National University), its facilities are very good, the practice conditions are quite complete and modern, enough to make a student from a "village school" like Thang feel "shocked".
Moreover, the teachers are very good, enthusiastic and dedicated. Although most of them are scientists who have made many contributions to the field of energy engineering in particular and the field of physics in general in Vietnam, when teaching students, they instruct them very enthusiastically, creating a comfortable and exciting learning atmosphere.
…to the owner of the 150 million VND scholarship
Loving the school and the subject, Thang has continuously made progress in the past two years. Except for the first semester (due to lack of conditions in a common subject), in the following semesters, Thang has received a scholarship to encourage learning from Hanoi National University.
Last year, Thang was one of the few students of Hanoi National University to receive a student scholarship from VINIF ( Vingroup Innovation Fund) and a Vallet scholarship from the Rencontres du Vietnam Organization.
Also last year, Thang joined the student team of the University of Technology to compete in the National Physics Olympiad for students and won 2 second prizes in the individual exercises and multiple choice tests (the school team won first prize overall).
Last August, as the main author of a scientific paper, Thang attended and presented the paper's content at the CASEAN International Conference (a natural science conference for young scientists, graduate students and postgraduate students from Southeast Asian countries).
After Hanoi National University announced that it was accepting applications for the IMG scholarship, Thang eagerly applied. Eleven applications were selected for the interview round, including Thang.
"The other 10 students are all very good, I know I am not the best, but I am very confident that I was chosen. I attended the interview with that confidence, so when I was announced as the only person to receive the 150 million VND scholarship this school year, I was not too surprised but very emotional. The number 150 million VND for a student is very large, very valuable. But the scholarship brings me a greater value, that is, the efforts I have gone through have been recognized. It is a great encouragement, motivating me to continue on my path", Thang shared.
Asked why he believed he would be selected for the 150 million VND scholarship, Thang replied: "When I read the announcement about the scholarship, I realized that I was a suitable candidate for the scholarship. I am not an all-round student, generally good at studying, but I am someone with a very clear direction for professional development.
In my professional activities, I have goals to strive for. Although I have achieved some achievements that have been recognized by my teachers, I am still on a continuing journey, not just finishing and being praised. I think the scholarship fund sees that in me."
Thang’s plan is to graduate from university and apply for a scholarship to continue his studies for a master’s or doctorate at prestigious universities in the fields of semiconductors and materials science. His first dream is a good university in the US, if not, then maybe a university in Singapore, or some other Asian countries such as Korea or Japan.
Thang said: "Many young people are like me 2 years ago, they like basic science but are attracted to fields that feel easy to learn and easy to make money such as business, management... Actually, if anyone likes basic science, they should "bravely" pursue it, because currently, schools that train basic science are not only purely theoretical but also applied. In the future, those who want to follow the path of academic research can also cooperate with businesses, together producing products with application".
The IMG Talent Scholarship will begin in 2022 and will be awarded annually. Eligible students are full-time students of member schools under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, who simultaneously meet a number of "hard" criteria such as: average score for the year of scholarship consideration above 3.8/4; actively participate in scientific research activities, school activities, have contributions to the community and society...
