Improve agricultural production efficiency

Changing and orienting crop structure, using new varieties with high productivity and quality, promoting the implementation of demonstration models of crop varieties... are solutions applied by the city's agricultural sector to improve the efficiency of agricultural production.

Use high yield varieties

In recent times, agricultural production in Hoa Vang district and the city has achieved many positive results with high output and productivity and guaranteed quality and farming efficiency. This is the result of the process of converting crop structure and applying advanced technical advances in agricultural production. In rice production, the agricultural sector regularly implements orientation of rice variety structure for each crop.

For example, in the two winter-spring rice crops of 2022-2023 and summer-autumn 2023, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has arranged a structure of medium- and short-term varieties with high yield, good quality, adapted to the ecological conditions of Da Nang ; suitable for the situation of climate change and reducing pressure on land clearance between the two crops, saving irrigation water and limiting risks due to weather, late-season rain and floods.

The agricultural sector has promoted the use of technical varieties (certified varieties, purebred varieties, etc.), carried out propaganda and launched a movement to reduce the amount of seeds sown in the fields. Currently, the main varieties in the city's seed structure include: Ha Phat 3, DT100, HT1; supplementary varieties include HN6, Dai Thom 8, Thien Uu 8, VNR20; promising varieties include Huong Chau 6, Bac Huong 9, JO2, Thom Huong 31, ST25, VNR10. In addition, to have raw materials for the production of typical products (rice paper, Quang noodles, etc.), communes in Hoa Vang district have arranged separate areas with a total area of not more than 5% of the total production area to sow the 13/2 variety. Through actual production, the rice varieties in the structure are all tolerant to intensive farming and have high yield potential.

It is known that before introducing advanced technical varieties and selecting new varieties into the Da Nang variety structure, the city's agricultural sector conducted many pilot demonstrations in production crops. Most recently, at the end of August 2023, the Agricultural and Forestry Extension Center demonstrated 5 rice varieties including: ST25, DB18, Thom Huong 31, Thien Huong 6 and VNR10 with the participation of 52 households, on a scale of 6 hectares in the field of Duong Lam 2 village, Hoa Phong commune, Hoa Vang district. Most of these rice varieties were demonstrated in the previous 2 crops in the fields of communes in the district, with Thien Huong 6 and DB18 being two newly recognized varieties and being demonstrated for the first time in Da Nang.

Strengthening rice variety demonstration models

Mr. Nguyen Si, Director of Hoa Phong 1 Agricultural Production Service Cooperative, said that one of the main reasons for the decrease in crop productivity, especially rice productivity, is the quality of the seeds. Varieties produced for many years often degenerate, with reduced quality and productivity. Therefore, the demonstration and introduction of new varieties with high productivity and quality into the seed structure plays an important role, contributing to improving the efficiency of agricultural production in the city.

“When implementing the demonstration model, the new rice varieties all achieved the desired results, high yield, stable quality, adaptability to climate conditions as well as good resistance to pests and diseases. Therefore, the cooperative hopes that the new varieties will be widely produced for farmers, replacing the old varieties that have degenerated,” said Mr. Si.

According to Deputy Director of the Agricultural and Forestry Extension Center Ngo Thi Thu Van, the goal of the annual agricultural extension program is to introduce and demonstrate new rice varieties and quality rice to increase productivity and evaluate the adaptability of the varieties for mass production. At the same time, replicate the organic quality rice model so that people can grasp the environmentally friendly rice production process, creating safe and quality products for consumers. The new quality rice varieties demonstrated must meet the conditions suitable for the climate and ecology of Da Nang, have high resistance to pests and diseases, and have stable productivity. To ensure the effectiveness of the demonstration models, the center always sends staff to the field to guide people to properly implement the steps in the process, from sowing to pest and disease prevention; introduce and link with a number of units to purchase rice from farmers at a price about 1.5 times higher than mass production.

“The demonstration of new rice varieties, especially the introduction of technically advanced varieties into production, plays an important role in helping to limit the phenomenon of variety degeneration and reduce production costs for farmers,” Ms. Van shared.

Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Phu Ban acknowledged that through the construction and implementation of demonstration models, many high-quality, high-yield rice varieties and crops have been put into production and brought economic efficiency to farmers; contributing to gradually changing farming practices, shifting crop structure, increasing productivity and quality of rice. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development also requested units and localities to continue to coordinate to promote demonstration and testing of new rice varieties to have a basis for propaganda and advising farmers to expand the area of mass production; at the same time, it is the basis for proposing to include in the structure of rice varieties planted in the coming crops.
