According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, the airspace of Gia Binh International Airport is located near the controlled approach airspace of Noi Bai International Airport, the distance between the two airports is only about 43km.
Due to the limited overall airspace capacity, the authorities will reallocate traffic between the two airports. The increase in capacity of Gia Binh International Airport will correspond to the decrease in capacity of Noi Bai International Airport.
Specifically, Gia Binh International Airport adjusted for the 2021-2030 period has an expected capacity of about 30 million passengers/year, with a vision to 2050 of about 50 million passengers/year. Noi Bai International Airport adjusted for the 2021-2030 period has an expected capacity of about 35 million passengers/year, with a vision to 2050 of about 60 million passengers/year.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam proposed that the adjustment of the National Airport System Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, be carried out in accordance with simplified procedures to adjust the capacity of the two airports and soon implement according to the plan.
Previously, Gia Binh International Airport started construction on December 10, 2024. According to the initial plan, this airport has a capacity of 5 million passengers/year. By 2050, the airport's capacity will increase to 15 million passengers/year.
