A NATO diplomat said all members agreed to the decision. The extension will be formally announced next week. A meeting of ambassadors from NATO member states will ratify the agreement.

Extending Jens Stoltenberg’s term is an option the allies are open to, according to US Ambassador to NATO Julianne Smith. Some diplomats said the allies have been looking for a successor to Jens Stoltenberg but have failed to agree on candidates.

Appointed on October 1, 2014 for a four-year term, former Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg served two terms as NATO Secretary General and was extended for another year in 2022 after Russia launched a special military campaign in Ukraine.
