Felix Nmecha scored the only goal in first-half stoppage time as Dortmund beat Newcastle in a match the visitors had to win to keep their hopes of progressing alive. The German side's first win in Group F saw Dortmund move above Newcastle on the head-to-head record, with both teams level on four points.

Newcastle cannot maintain impressive streak

Newcastle marked their return to Europe's top flight for the first time in 20 years with an impressive run of form, including a 4-1 win over PSG three weeks ago. But the Magpies have been unable to maintain that form after a disappointing performance at their home ground of St James' Park.

Dortmund failed to score in their opening two group games, but last month's defeat to PSG was their only defeat in 12 games so far this season. Newcastle were dealt a blow in this game when former Dortmund striker Alexander Isak was forced off with an injury.

Meanwhile, new signing Sandro Tonali is expected to be banned for 10 months in the coming days for allegedly breaching betting rules while playing for AC Milan. However, coach Eddie Howe still brought the Italian international off the bench for the final 25 minutes but could not help the home team avoid defeat.

After the match, coach Howe told TNT Sports : "Tactically, they played well and made it difficult for us in central areas. In the second half, we played much better and unfortunately the ball did not go in. The goal denied us a chance but the team has to look back at themselves, they will face difficulties in the race for the next round."

The race for tickets to the next round of Group F promises to be exciting when PSG defeated AC Milan 3-0 at home to lead the group with 6 points.

Haaland (right) ends Champions League goal drought

In Group G, Erling Haaland ended his five-game Champions League goal drought with a brace as Man City beat Young Boys 3-1 at home. The win took Pep Guardiola's side to the top of Group G after three wins and a result against Young Boys at the Etihad next month will ensure Man City progress to the last 16.

Barcelona continued their winning run in Champions League Group H with a 2-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk, giving them a morale-boosting boost ahead of this weekend's El Clasico clash with Real Madrid. With three wins from three, Barcelona have one foot in the next round.
