The best rule of thumb is to always take fish oil with food, preferably food that contains fat. Omega-3 fatty acids are fat-soluble, meaning they are best absorbed when taken with food that contains fat, according to Medical News Today.

Research has found that the absorption of omega-3 fatty acids is doubled when taken with a high-fat meal compared to a low-fat meal. A 2019 review found that taking omega-3 fish oil with fatty foods increases bioavailability, making it easier for the body to absorb. A 2015 review found that taking fish oil with a low-fat meal reduces absorption.

So it's best to take omega-3 fish oil with breakfast, lunch, or dinner, any meal that contains healthy fats like avocado, nuts, eggs, or olive oil.

Breakfast or Dinner: Based on Personal Goals

While no major studies have shown that omega-3s should be taken at a specific time of day, your personal goals can help guide you.

For overall health: Taking fish oil in the morning can help boost energy and focus throughout the day, thanks to DHA's role in brain and nerve function. Morning or lunch is fine, especially if it's the time of your largest and most balanced meal.

For heart and joint health: If these are your goals, taking it in the evening may be more beneficial.

For heart health and cholesterol levels: Studies show that taking it in the evening may help improve lipid profiles better because cholesterol production in the liver peaks at night.

Additionally, some studies show that taking fish oil at night can help reduce nighttime inflammation, aid muscle recovery, and improve sleep quality, according to the Times Of India.

So, depending on your own health goals, choose the best time to take fish oil.

Consistency is very important

When it comes to taking omega-3 fish oil, consistency is as important as timing. The benefits of this supplement are cumulative over time. Taking it at the same time every day helps create a healthy habit, keeps omega-3 fatty acid levels stable in the blood, improves long-term heart and brain health, and reduces inflammation more effectively.
