The Russian Army (RFAF) captured the village of Zarichne (Kirovsk in Russian) and the surrounding area; thus, in effect, the RFAF approached Lyman from the northeast, since from Lyman to Zarichne, although 7 km, the area between these two positions was completely open. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed today that its Western Army Group has taken full control of Zarichne, despite efforts by the Ukrainian Army (AFU) to establish a defensive line along the Zherebets River, separating the village of Zarichne from the village of Torskoye.
Although the Russians did in fact approach Lyman directly, they probably wouldn’t attack Lyman directly. The problem is that the area between Zarichne and Lyman is very open, with only one road and very little vegetation, leaving the attackers with nowhere to hide from AFU fire and UAVs. It is now late autumn in Ukraine, the trees have begun to shed their leaves, so the foliage can no longer hide the ground forces. However, the RFAF has other attack options, for example, from the northwest through Shandrigolovo, Derilovo and Drobyshevo. The RFAF's attack here is also progressing well. The Military Summary channel reported that the RFAF continued its offensive on the Seversk-Lyman axis. Although the Russians did not capture Drobyshevo, they controlled Derilovo. The Yampol direction was also an option, but the AFU here firmly held their ground and the village changed hands repeatedly. Geolocated videos also show a Russian military presence just outside Dronivka in the direction of Seversk. Pressure on Ukrainian defenses north of Donetsk is increasing by the day. Readovka also confirmed that the RFAF has taken control of a large rural area northwest of Lyman. Units of the RFAF 20th Guards Army made significant progress in the battle for a large fortified area at Shandrigolovo. After capturing the village, the Russians also took control of the neighboring village of Derilovo. Russian assault troops then continued to destroy the remaining enemy defenses at Drobyshevo and Novosyolka.
Since the AFU could not hold the Shandrigolovo front, they now had little chance of stopping the Russian advance north of Lyman. The RFAF's objective was to reach the Seversky Donets River near the village of Yarovaya, which would give them the opportunity to encircle Lyman from the north. Meanwhile, the AFU was trying to counterattack in the Yampol and Zarichny areas; at the same time, they were also trying to maintain the communication lines between Siversk and Lyman. This explains why they were still holding out to the east and northeast of Lyman. Currently, the logistics of the operation to Lyman are not completely blocked, as the Brusivka border crossing and the T0514 route are still operational, but they are under constant threat from Russian FPV UAVs. The AFU is currently unable to do anything to improve the situation in the north of Lyman due to the lack of forces. For them, maintaining the supply route to Seversk is now more important. However, this option had a serious drawback: the northern approaches to the Lyman logistics area could be cut off by the RFAF. The densely wooded terrain near the Seversky Donets River would likely provide convenient cover for Russian troops.
According to AMK Mapping, on the northern flank of Siversk, the RFAF continues to make significant advances and has partially broken through the Ukrainian defenses outside the city. North of Siversk, the RFAF continues to penetrate through the fields towards Dronivka and has consolidated its position in the mine area. As a result, the Ukrainian troops, after being forced to withdraw from the village of Serebryanka, organized a new three-pronged defense line at Dronivka. The Russian troops also occupied the rest of Serebryanka, as well as the surrounding positions, and tried to establish a permanent position at the mine. RFAF also completely controlled the northern bank of the Siverskyi Donets River, arranged the front along the border of the two Donetsk - Lugansk provinces, officially ending the battles for the Severodonetsk district of Lugansk province, which had been going on since the early days of the war (February 2022). The RFAF continues to attack Yampil, consolidating control of additional positions east of the village, including the train station, and continuing attacks beyond the village center (which is currently in the gray zone), according to the Military Summary channel. Russian forces also advanced further west through the forests, gaining control of the railway crossing and surrounding areas.
If Russia recaptures Lyman, it will open the way to the twin cities of Slavyansk-Kramatorsk, which are the main and last line of defense for Ukraine in Donetsk. Currently, the assault on these two cities is being launched from Konstantinovka and Seversk by units of the Southern and Western Army Groups from the Lyman direction.
