According to Ria Novosti, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Moscow has decided to suspend annual contributions to the Arctic Council until “real work” resumes with the participation of all member states.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry roving ambassador Nikolai Korchunov stated that Moscow does not rule out the possibility of withdrawing from the Arctic Council if the organization's activities are not in line with Russia's interests. According to Korchunov, the Arctic Council is operating "at the lowest level."
The Arctic Council, established in 1996, is a high-level intergovernmental forum aimed at facilitating regional cooperation, particularly in the field of environmental protection. The Council comprises Denmark (representing Greenland and the Faroe Islands), Iceland, Canada, Norway, Russia, the United States, Finland, and Sweden. Member states take turns holding the presidency every two years.
