According to Ria Novosti, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Moscow decided to suspend annual contributions to the Arctic Council until “real work” is resumed with the participation of all member states.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Nikolai Korchunov said that Moscow does not rule out the possibility of withdrawing from the Arctic Council if the organization’s activities do not match Russia’s interests. According to Mr. Korchunov, the Arctic Council is operating “at the lowest level”.
The Arctic Council, established in 1996, is a high-level intergovernmental forum that facilitates cooperation in the region, particularly in the field of environmental protection. The Council is composed of Denmark (representing Greenland and the Faroe Islands), Iceland, Canada, Norway, Russia, the United States, Finland and Sweden. The member states rotate the presidency every two years.
