The Russian military (RFAF), continuing its offensive in the direction of Pokrovsk-Mirnograd, has now established a small encirclement in the south of the city (northeast of the area between the Chunishino – Novopavlivka axis), reports the Russian news site Military Review. Thanks to these successful operations, the RFAF control area in the Novopavlovka area has been expanded, establishing a small encirclement with Ukrainian forces defending the Solnechny sub-district south of Pokrovsk. While the northern flank of the Pokrovsk encirclement has also been expanded. RFAF units are breaking through near the village of Shakhove, where the Ukrainian Army (AFU) continues to organize counter-attacks.
The RFAF continued to employ a combination of encirclement and diversion tactics. After the RFAF took control of the village of Kozatske (known as Moskovskoye in Russian) and advanced on Mirnohrad from the east, the Ukrainian garrison had little opportunity to maneuver and reorganize its defensive positions. However, the Ukrainians put up fierce resistance. The Russian Defense Ministry said on October 14 that the RFAF was making heavy advances east of Mirnograd, and this was corroborated by military bloggers. Several geolocated videos also showed further Russian advances east and north of the city, including in the town of Rodynske. RVvonekor channel confirmed that units of the RFAF Central Group of Operations have actively carried out operations to take control of the Kazatskoye settlement in the east of the Myrnohrad urban area, turning Kozatske into a bridgehead for Russian troops to enter the eastern part of the Mirnograd urban area, from which to penetrate the city center. Despite the AFU's large-scale deployment of forces to reinforce the defense line, the Ukrainian army has officially fallen at Kozatske. This is the eastern front line of the AFU's Pokrovsk stronghold, with key positions in Mirnograd, stretching from north to south over rugged terrain with many industrial and urban areas, with a frontage of nearly 7km. So now the two “east-west” pincers of RFAF in Pokrovsk are only about 7km apart. With such a narrow corridor, all types of firepower, especially UAV FPV, can completely control all actions of the Ukrainian army 24/7.
Meanwhile, the Russians continued their breakthrough operations north of the town of Rodinskoe, where the AFU was partially surrounded. These simultaneous actions by the RFAF Army Group Center, conducted along a 14km front, simultaneously put pressure on the Ukrainian troops defending the eastern side of the Pokrovsk line. Thus, a ring around the city of Pokrovsk from the north and south is forming, and the central direction of Kazatske - Rovne is dividing the area into two northern and southern parts. In the future, if the AFU commander does not order a retreat soon, their units may be wiped out. As the pressure on Pokrovsk increased, the Russian Dobropolye thrust (north of Pokrovsk) continued to expand. According to Readovka, the RFAF took control of Volodymyrivka, at the foot of the Dobropolye thrust, posing a serious challenge to the Ukrainian counterattack. Over the past month, the AFU has attempted to counterattack and cut off Russia’s Dobropolye thrust from the direction of Rodinske and Shakhove, but has been completely unsuccessful. Russian military expert Alexey Anpilogov, speaking to Readovka, said that after the reinforcements, the RFAF will “cut off” these pincers. Taking control of Volodymyrivka would give the RFAF access to Shakhove, the supply route for the Ukrainian counter-offensive from Druzhkovka, to break through to Zolotoy Kolodez. If this RFAF counter-offensive goes well, the AFU will have difficulty holding the rest of Donetsk.
The odds are now in Russia’s favor in air defense. War correspondents and the Ukrainian Telegram channel reported that the RFAF used tanks and armored vehicles to capture Vladimirovka. This was also the first time in a long time that the RFAF continued to use these weapons on the battlefield. According to analysts, a combination of factors allowed the RFAF to use mechanized forces in the attack. Firstly, the vehicles were very well prepared, reinforced with enhanced armor, as well as anti-UAV FPV nets. Second, poor weather conditions also played a role, allowing the Russians to secretly concentrate a large number of armored vehicles. Military expert Andrei Marochko told Readovka that low cloud ceilings prevented enemy UAVs from maintaining reliable surveillance over RFAF positions.
The closer it gets to winter, the more problems the AFU will have with heavy mechanized weapons, as their weapons, currently mainly sourced from NATO countries, are not suitable for the regional climate. "Russian weapons are designed to suit different climates and terrains. This has been noted even in the West," Mr. Marochko concluded. Military experts believe that Russia's control of Pokrovsk by the end of this year would be a great success. However, for objective reasons, the RFAF leadership has not set any deadlines. Moreover, the AFU still has enough troops and weapons to continue the resistance on the Pokrovsk front. (photo source: Military Review, Ukrinform, Kyiv Post, Readovka).
