On the afternoon of May 30, the Hue City People's Committee held a regular press conference for May 2025, in which the most interesting content was still the story revolving around the breaking of the national treasure, the Nguyen Dynasty throne.
Relic center leader takes responsibility after Nguyen Dynasty throne was violated
At the press conference, Mr. Hoang Viet Trung, Director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, said that the breaking of the Nguyen Dynasty throne was a very rare and heartbreaking incident. After the incident, Mr. Trung, as the head of the organization, admitted his shortcomings to the Hue City People's Committee.
"We have reviewed all work on protecting, preserving, and promoting the value of artifacts, national treasures, and relic sites to seriously learn from experience and avoid similar cases from happening again," said Mr. Trung.
According to Mr. Trung, the staff, especially the security guards at the center, have made every effort to protect and promote the value of artifacts and heritage of the Nguyen Dynasty.
However, due to the thin force and large management area with dozens of relics throughout Hue city, the above unfortunate incident occurred.
"We are also researching and planning to add more modern technology to the work of protecting relics, including researching the construction of a central security system with hundreds of surveillance cameras, thousands of fire alarm systems...", Mr. Trung shared.

Mr. Trung also said that the center's security guards used to be equipped with support tools such as electric batons, rubber batons, etc. However, these tools were just recalled nearly 2 months ago because they had expired.
Currently, it is not possible to equip support tools for security forces because according to regulations, to be equipped, security forces must be granted training certificates on the use of weapons, explosives and support tools trained by the police.
"Early this June, the center will send 25 guards to attend training. After receiving the certificates, we will immediately purchase support tools for the relic protection force," said Mr. Trung.
Directing research and early construction of a new Hue Royal Antiquities Museum
Mr. Tran Huu Thuy Giang, Chief of Office of Hue City People's Committee, said that after the incident of the national treasure of Nguyen Dynasty throne being violated, the city leaders directed a review of all work to protect relics and national treasures throughout Hue City.
According to Mr. Giang, after reviewing, we found that there are still many things that need to be reviewed and adjusted in the protection of relics. The city also requested the cultural sector and the police to develop plans to protect the safety of relics, especially national treasures.

Direct departments and branches to research and build a new Hue Royal Antiquities Museum as soon as possible because this is the place where measures can be taken to protect artifacts, antiques, and national treasures of the Nguyen Dynasty that are being preserved in the area.
"Protecting national treasures is not only about avoiding direct human impact on the artifacts, but also protecting them from objective factors such as weather, humidity, fire and explosion... At the same time, museums are also places where we can effectively promote the values of artifacts," said Mr. Giang.
The Hue Royal Antiquities Museum is currently located at Long An Palace (No. 3 Le Truc, Phu Xuan District, Hue City). This is a palace over 100 years old, made of wood.
In 2023, during his visit and work in Hue, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested Thua Thien Hue province (old) to coordinate with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to establish a project to build a museum in another location, returning the original space of Long An Palace relic.
However, due to many reasons, the construction of a new Hue Royal Antiquities Museum has not yet been possible.
Regarding the broken Nguyen Dynasty throne, Mr. Giang informed that the Hue City People's Committee has established a scientific council to assess the situation and find a solution to repair the throne.
This council includes chairman Nguyen Thanh Binh (vice chairman of Hue City People's Committee), two vice chairmen Phan Thanh Hai (director of Hue City Department of Culture and Sports) and Pham Dinh Phong (deputy director of the Department of Cultural Heritage, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism).
Council members include Mr. Nguyen Van Doan (Director of the National Museum of History), Mr. Pham Quoc Quan (former Director of the National Museum of History), Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong Thom (Head of Preservation Department, National Museum of History), Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hoa (researcher, former Director of the Department of Culture and Information of Thua Thien Hue province);
Mr. Phan Tien Dung (Chairman of Hue City Historical Science Association), Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hien (restorer and preservation expert, Thoi Gian Cabinet Company), Mr. Ho Huu Hanh (Director of Hue Monuments Restoration Joint Stock Company) and Mr. Ngo Van Minh (Director of Hue Royal Antiquities Museum).
