Ask:
I heard that people who snore and sleep during the day are prone to sleep apnea, which is not good for health. Is that true, doctor?

Dr. Phan Thanh Thuy, Respiratory Center, Bach Mai Hospital answered:
Sleep apnea syndrome is classified into 3 groups: Obstructive apnea, central apnea and mixed apnea.
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome accounts for the majority, often found in men, smokers, overweight, obese with body mass index BMI >23 kg/m2, short neck, small jaw; or family history of snoring, sleep apnea.
Signs that suggest sleep apnea include: Snoring, patient complaints of daytime sleepiness, unrefreshing sleep, morning fatigue or even insomnia.
Patients awaken during the night with episodes of apnea, gasping for breath, or a feeling of suffocation.
Sleep partners or others may note that the patient has frequent snoring, sleep apnea, or both.
Patients diagnosed with hypertension, mood disorders, cognitive disorders, coronary artery disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, or type 2 diabetes should be screened for sleep apnea if they have at least one of the following three symptoms: snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, or witnessed apnea.
However, for an accurate diagnosis, the patient needs to be examined by a specialist and have a respiratory polygraph or sleep polygraph for diagnosis.
According to statistics from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), up to 80% of patients with sleep apnea syndrome are undiagnosed.
