According to the reporter's records, at the Department of General Hematology 2, Nghe An Province Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center, dozens of patients are still waiting for blood.
Patient Quang Van Manh, from Yen Hoa commune, traveled nearly 200km to the provincial Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center to treat Thalassemia (congenital hemolytic anemia). Although he has been hospitalized for 3 days, he has not yet received a blood transfusion because the current blood reserve cannot meet the demand. In a similar situation, patient Lu Minh Thanh from Huu Khuong commune has also been waiting for blood for 3 days.
According to specialist 1 Pham Quoc Hoi , Head of the Department of General Hematology 2, the department currently treats about 60 patients, most of whom have blood diseases such as Thalassemia. In order for patients to have enough blood, the department needs about 3 to 4 units of blood each day. However, due to the current shortage of blood, patients cannot receive blood transfusions continuously, but must receive them every other day depending on the patient's condition.

Nghe An Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center is responsible for receiving, screening and supplying blood and blood products to 48 medical facilities in Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces. For nearly 2 months now, localities in the province have not been able to organize any mobile blood donation campaigns, while in previous years they regularly maintained 5-6 campaigns per month. This has caused many cases to be temporarily postponed if family members cannot be mobilized to donate blood to compensate.
Specialist Doctor 2 Pham Van Thai, Deputy Director of Nghe An Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center shared: Currently, the amount of blood only meets 40-50% of the treatment needs. The current amount of blood is only enough for emergency cases, while there is still not enough source for normal treatment cases. The current blood shortage is worrying, directly affecting emergency and treatment work. In the immediate future, the hospital still has to rely on support from the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion to maintain essential blood sources.
Faced with the difficulties of nearly depleted blood reserves, which greatly affects the emergency and treatment of patients, Nghe An Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center has developed many plans to increase blood reserves. In particular, calling on relatives, family members of patients and agencies and units in the area to actively participate in voluntary blood donation is one of the practical solutions, contributing to helping patients overcome their illnesses.

Most recently, the People's Committee of Nghe An province has issued Official Dispatch No. 231/UBND-VX on promoting voluntary blood donation in the context of implementing the 2-level local government model.
Accordingly, the Provincial People's Committee requests all levels, sectors, agencies, units, enterprises... to synchronously deploy measures to increase blood donation mobilization, striving to achieve the target of 1.4% or more of the local population participating in blood donation. In particular, it requests the People's Committees of 130 communes/wards in the area to urgently complete or establish a new Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation Mobilization at the commune/ward level.
