Overhearing that we had more than 100 million in Tet bonus, my husband's parents asked to provide all of that money for my sister to study for a master's degree.

My husband nodded, he was exhausted and didn't want to try to get close to his parents anymore.

I have been married for more than ten years, but because my parents are getting old, my husband and I sometimes let our children stay with them for a few weeks, sometimes even a month.

Of course, every time my family comes over, we are considerate and give them extra money or buy them food so they don't have to feed their children and grandchildren.

Earlier this month, my husband and I took our child to stay with my grandparents for a few weeks. At first, it was fine, but in the past few days, every time we had meals, my grandparents kept talking about how old they were and how my sister-in-law still had to go to school. She was a good student but we couldn't take care of her.

Then he told the story of the past, saying that my husband was lucky because when he was born, his parents were young and healthy so they could take care of him from A to Z.

Every time like that, my husband was very upset because he didn't get any bribes. After passing the university entrance exam, he had to work part-time to earn money to pay for it. Luckily, the major my husband chose was one that received tuition support from the State, otherwise he would have had to drop out of school halfway.

After graduating, you have to go find a job yourself, your grandparents don't care. When you have a job and earn an income, they only ask how much your salary is, they never ask if your work is hard.

Then I realized that the source of the story of suffering at the dinner table started from a little good news for my husband and I. Normally, the combined Tet bonus of my husband and I is not too bad, but this year, we are lucky, we might receive a pretty big Tet bonus from the company, maybe up to more than 100 million.

It was the result of a year of hard work, sleepless nights and relentless efforts. We also discussed that we would probably save more money and renovate the house after Tet because my two children were getting older and they were starting to not like sharing a room with each other anymore. In addition, we would probably set aside a small amount for the two children to travel with their parents.

However, I don't know if it was because my husband and I were talking about this while going to bed and my in-laws who lived next door accidentally overheard it or not, but they found out about our Tet bonus. And from then on, things gradually went in a different direction. They aimed for this Tet bonus to help their beloved daughter study for a master's degree.

After a few hints that my husband and I didn't understand, my parents asked the question directly.

- Mom and Dad heard that you two are going to get about 100 million VND in Tet bonus. Look, Mom and Dad are old, we have taken care of the older brother well, now you two have to help us take care of the younger brother. After Tet, the little girl is studying for her master's degree, so you two are arranging for her Tet bonus this year to pay for her tuition.

I understand that investing ineducation is important, but why do we have the obligation to educate other people's children? We also want to support them within our ability, but why do we have to give them all the money that is the result of our family's hard work for a year? Not to mention, after giving your daughter to your parents, what will our child eat? Drinking water and breathing air to live?

My husband, a man who always puts his family first, decided that he could not comply with his parents' request. He thought that it was unreasonable and that we needed to have a clear plan for the future, not just indulge in outside affairs. He was willing to support his sister a small part, about 10 million, as a way of encouragement and sharing, but not the whole thing.

As soon as he finished speaking, my husband's parents seemed to transform into two different people.

When my husband and I said that, my grandparents stood up immediately, banged the table loudly, and chased their children and grandchildren out of the house. In front of our two young grandchildren, they cursed and insulted them so much that they scared the two of us so much that our faces turned pale.

Both my self-esteem and family affection were deeply hurt. I began to wonder if family affection was really a constant in life, or was it just a fragile feeling that could easily break when money was put into the balance? The madness inside me flared up, but because I loved my husband, I gritted my teeth and endured, letting him be the one to make the final decision. I accepted to follow my husband's wishes even though I was not willing in my heart.

Finally, my husband decided to leave. He took his wife and children to the car and left in silence. Despite years of unfair treatment, he still tried to mend and maintain his relationship with his parents. I understand this. But it seems that all his efforts did not bring back any love from the people who gave birth to him.

The talk about money, instead of being a blessing for the new year, has now become a source of arguments and misunderstandings. The feeling of being expected and imposed has made our living space heavy, making it difficult to breathe.

Our story is not unique, but the pain and complexity it brings is undeniable. I just hope that, wherever this goes, whether we make up or not, we can still maintain our sense of justice and dignity.

What made me most angry was that my parents had treated my husband unfairly and now continued to behave badly in front of my children. This time, I declared to my husband that I would never set foot in that house again. My husband nodded, he was exhausted and no longer wanted to try to get close to his parents.
