Opera artist Bich Thuy currently lives and works in Austria, but her feelings are always directed towards Vietnam and she pays special attention to the development of Vietnamese vocal music. However, in her heart, she always reserves an important part for Vietnamese music . The book, which she has cherished for many years, is considered a valuable source of documents for vocal pedagogy in Vietnam, especially in the context of reference documents in this field becoming scarce.
After many years of research and with the support of many people, Nguyen Bich Thuy has completed the publication of her first book. The book is especially dedicated to the teachers who taught and guided her throughout her path of learning and self-improvement. The book is also a gift she gives to her family, especially to her father - who gave her the motivation to complete the book.

“ The Science and Art of Singing: An In-Depth Approach to Classical Vocal Music” in addition to the introduction and summary has a total of 14 chapters with the main content introducing the core vocal techniques that any vocal style uses. Accordingly, it focuses on analyzing the physical functions of the vocal tract and respiratory system as well as talking about the importance of pronunciation combined to create artistic techniques such as: Chiaroscuro, Appoggio, Portamento, pronunciation, messa di voce, agility and vibrato techniques, etc.
In addition, the book introduces readers to a very special chapter, which is how to determine the vocal genre through the German Fach System. In it, the concept of Falsetto, female head voice and male head voice is clearly analyzed. The book also talks about an equally important issue that often causes many concerns for singers: whether to breathe through the nose or mouth. And explains why opera singers use vibrato so much. A very important technique that we often overlook is the pronunciation and modification of vowels, which is also mentioned in this book.
In addition, the book also introduces some representative international vocal schools and devotes a chapter to vocal pedagogues of the ancient Italian vocal school - which discovered many techniques that influenced all classical vocal schools around the world . At the same time, the book will also introduce some contemporary vocal pedagogues and researchers who are representative in the field of vocal training in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Dr. People's Artist Do Quoc Hung - Director of the Vietnam National Academy of Music commented: "In the development journey of Vietnam's professional music, the field of vocal music has affirmed its important role, contributing to the formation of generations of talented artists and laying the foundation for a systematic music education. However, in the strong flow of international integration, the approach and systematization of vocal knowledge in an in-depth direction, especially in the field of opera and international vocal pedagogy, is still a gap that not many domestic works can fill.
The book “Science and Art of Singing: An In-depth Approach to Classical Vocal Music” by vocal artist Nguyen Bich Thuy, an experienced performer and teacher in Vietnam as well as internationally, is a valuable effort to help fill that gap. Not only does it have professional value, the book can also become a useful reference for music researchers, pedagogues, and audiences who love vocal art. In the context of Vietnam’s professional music education gradually integrating deeply with the world, the appearance of a book like Science and Art of Singing is very valuable.”
