San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers told reporters that Oropesa was arrested at a home after multiple law enforcement agencies searched for him. “He will spend the rest of his life behind bars for killing those five people,” he said.
The victims were murdered in Cleveland, Texas. The suspect was arrested in Cut and Shoot, Texas, about 17 miles west of the crime scene.
Officials said the incident began Friday night when Oropesa went out to practice shooting in his yard, then neighbors asked him to stop because the gunfire woke their children.
According to police and witnesses, the suspect then went inside the house and loaded a gun, then stormed into a neighbor's house and opened fire, killing five of the 10 people inside, including an 8-year-old boy.
Most of the victims were shot in the head. Sheriff Capers said all were from Honduras but not all were family members.
The victims were identified as Sonia Argentina Guzman, 25; Diana Velazquez Alvarado, 21; Julisa Molina Rivera, 31; Jose Jonathan Casarez, 18; and Daniel Enrique Laso, 8.
