Research on the treatment effectiveness of the Acacia auriculiformis plant

Vietnam currently has about 7 million people with diabetes, of which about 55% have complications. Notably, the number of people with this disease is increasing rapidly and tends to be younger, while the cost and time of treatment are expensive and prolonged...

From that practice, scientists of the Institute of Chemistry, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology have successfully researched the effects of the vông nem tree in supporting diabetes treatment.

The Erythrina variegata L. is a woody plant, 10 to 20 meters high and is grown as an ornamental plant or for its edible leaves. The Erythrina variegata L., a member of the Fabaceae family, grows abundantly in coastal areas, lowland areas or plains. In some localities, the plant is also known as the Erythrina variegata, the Erythrina variegata, and is often combined with some medicinal plants to treat nervous breakdown, lower blood pressure, sedation, insomnia, and night sweats in children... In terms of chemical composition, the Erythrina variegata L. contains the main components of flavonoid compounds and their derivatives, some phytosterols, alkaloids and polyphenols.

The effects of the Acacia auriculiformis plant in traditional medicine have been confirmed, but in Vietnam, research on the use of this medicinal herb to support diabetes treatment is still limited. On the contrary, in the world , there have been many scientific research projects on the biological activity as well as the chemical composition of some Acacia auriculiformis species. One of the outstanding activities of this species is sedation, inhibition of tumor growth, anti-inflammation and especially the effect of activating the enzyme AMPK to treat metabolic disorders such as blood sugar, blood fat, obesity, etc.

Based on practical needs, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Phi Hung and his colleagues at the Institute of Chemistry of Natural Compounds (now the Institute of Chemistry) have developed the technology: "Research on the production process of preparations, orientation to support diabetes treatment from Erythrina variegata L.)".

During the implementation of the task, the research team developed a process for extracting semi-finished products from the Acacia auriculiformis plant and supplementary extracts containing valuable active ingredients from Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Gymnema sylvestre, Polygala tenuifolia, and Turmeric. Then, the active ingredients of these medicinal herbs were combined to create the TD-VN preparation (diabetes preparation-Acacia auriculiformis) in hard capsule form.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Phi Hung, during the implementation of the task, the research team spent a lot of time, research and focused on studying and evaluating the biological activity of the TĐ-VN preparation sample on an in vitro model related to diabetes. The results showed that this preparation sample has the effect of inhibiting the activity of the a-glucosidase enzyme and the PTP1B enzyme, and at the same time has the ability to enhance blood sugar absorption on the cell model. According to the results of the acute toxicity assessment on the experimental animal model, the preparation

TD-VN is safe orally in white mice. In the case of using the preparation at a dose of 350 mg/kg/day combined with low-dose Streptozocin, it has the effect of increasing insulin and lowering blood sugar in white rats with type 2 diabetes. In addition, the preparation also helps improve symptoms and limit complications of diabetes such as: Reducing pancreatic damage and kidney failure. The effects of this preparation are equivalent to gliclazide (diabetes treatment drug) at a dose of 20 mg/kg/day and is highly safe, causing no side effects when used.

Based on the test results, successfully extracting valuable active ingredients from the vông nem tree and other precious medicinal herbs of Vietnam, the research team has developed a formula and prepared more than 2,000 hard capsules with a mass of 500 mg/capsule that have the effect of lowering blood sugar with a high level of safety. In addition to the main use of supporting diabetes treatment, the TD-VN preparation also has the effects of helping to stabilize blood pressure, lower blood fat and anti-inflammatory...

With positive results and systematic scientific research, the Council for Acceptance of Tasks at the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology has evaluated the technology development task: "Research on the production process of preparations, orientation to support diabetes treatment from Erythrina variegata L.)" as excellent.

The success of the scientific research results has supported the research team to publish 3 international articles in the SCIE category, 1 international article in the Scopus category, 1 patent and 5 useful solutions have been accepted for patent registration. The task also contributed to training 1 master in organic chemistry, supporting the training of 1 doctoral student and guiding 4 bachelors to defend their graduation thesis in organic chemistry.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Phi Hung shared: “The success of the task “Research on the production process of preparations, orientation to support diabetes treatment from Erythrina variegata L.” has opened up new research potentials from folk medicinal plants. If the TD-VN capsule product is widely developed and provided to diabetics in need, it will contribute to minimizing treatment costs, ensuring health safety and limiting many side effects caused by using Western medicine... Moreover, the medicinal herbs combined with Erythrina variegata to prepare the TD-VN product are all valuable medicinal plants, effective in supporting the treatment of many metabolic disorders and protecting the health of users”.
