Which Japanese stars are in the 'dream team' of the volleyball world championship?

Alongside the superstars of the newly crowned champions Italy, a star of the Japanese women's volleyball team has been voted into the "dream team" of the 2025 World Championship.

The "Dream Team", or more specifically the Best Team of the tournament, was announced by the organizers right after the final match ended. Mayu Ishikawa of Japan was one of the 7 names announced.

This is a great honor for Ishikawa, because Japan only ranked 4th in the 2025 Women's Volleyball World Championship, generally inferior to Italy (champion), Turkey (2nd) and Brazil (3rd).

Even though Japan did not win a medal, Mayu Ishikawa's excellence is beyond question.

As a main winger, Ishikawa scored 141 points in the tournament, behind only Gabi (142 points) of Brazil and Vargas (151 points) of Türkiye. The captain of the Japanese team played well in all matches in the tournament.

The remaining 6 names in the "Dream team" are Alessia Orro, the setter of the Italian team; main attacker Gabi of Brazil; 2 middle blockers Anna Danesi (Italy), Eda Erdem (Türkiye); opposite setter Vargas (Türkiye), and libero De Gennaro (Italy).

Interestingly, the Best Player award went to Orro, a setter, and not to one of the attackers or opposite setters.

As a setter, Orro was very low on the scoring charts. She only scored 17 points, ranking 62nd in the tournament.

However, the role of a setter is not just about scoring points. Orro is considered the "brain" in the extremely diverse playing style of the Italian team.

Orro's role was evident in the final. She was rated at 33% effective in the attack, the highest in the match.

Orro is 27 years old this year, at the peak of her career. She has just officially left her home country to compete in Türkiye since June this year.

Meanwhile, Mayu Ishikawa is only 25 years old but is already the captain of the Japanese team. She promises to explode and become one of the world's top volleyball superstars in the near future.
