Google has officially released the Android 16 update to global users, starting with compatible devices. The tech giant also confirmed that new devices launched in the next few months will have this operating system pre-installed.

On the security front, Google has consolidated all of its security features into a single hub. With just one tap, users can protect themselves from cyberattacks, malicious apps, unsafe websites, and fraudulent calls. The hub also integrates the phishing detection feature that was revealed in May.

In particular, photography enthusiasts will be welcomed with a powerful new set of tools including: automatic space recognition and night mode activation; automatic exposure; and the ability to fine-tune color temperature more accurately. Google also brings Ultra HDR image enhancement technology and support for HEIC file encoding without the need for a conversion tool.

A highly anticipated feature, Desktop Mode, is also included in this update. However, this feature is currently in the testing phase exclusively for developers and is expected to be widely released later this year.

The Android ecosystem is also getting a refresh with a number of other exciting updates. Notably, RCS group chats have been upgraded with custom icons and the ability to mute conversations. Finally, the Google Photos app has an AI photo editor that automatically suggests optimal edits, and Emoji Kitchen (emoji creation) has more unique sticker combinations.
