'Strange traveler' Nguyen Linh and his adventure with streets, traditional opera, and classical drama

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên02/05/2024

During my trips to the North, I was fortunate to meet several impressive people, including painter Nguyen Linh. Speaking of impressive people here, in my own subjective and personal way, for several reasons:

Nguyen Linh is so "good at his job" that I think it's hard for anyone to surpass him. "Professional" here is not only learning about fine arts systematically, but he has focused on or "practiced" fundamentally at every stage of his life. He never stops thinking or practicing about it.

Works by artist Nguyen Linh introduced at this exhibition

He painted in a "creative solitude" way, without needing to share or having a "reason" to display or exhibit. Painting was like a fleeting awareness in the impermanence that is disintegrating day by day. I suddenly remembered the saying "Who will give me a sponge so that I can erase all horizons?" (Nietzsche). Replacing the sponge with colors, the philosopher Nietzsche's proposition becomes even more splendid...

And the foam, the colors, the paintings of Nguyen Linh opened up in the middle of reality, making me dizzy. I once spent a day just looking at his paintings in a house dedicated to paintings.

And "horror" to the point that the paintings are stacked layer upon layer, pressed together like tiles. There is not a single space that is not used to contain the paintings.

Linh painted as if to control the color madness. There was no room for delay and no fear of being left behind. He was always aware that he was an artist, not a restaurant owner or a gangster riding a huge, bulky, terrifying motorbike...

Tôi đã từng bỏ một ngày để chỉ xem tranh của anh, trong một căn nhà chỉ dành riêng cho tranh

I once spent a day just looking at his paintings, in a house dedicated to paintings only.

Nguyen Linh always gives people the feeling that he is very safe and majestic in his giant wings, but it has the opposite effect on me. He is like the character of the existentialist writer Frank Kafka who wakes up one morning to find himself swollen with a strange appearance, his body grows hard wings, and many horny whiskers, "transforming" into a cockroach. The trembling in that soul is the instinctive signal of the remaining artist. And it proves that Nguyen Linh in his strange wings is extremely weak before the flight of art. In another sense, his paintings seem to resist the erosion of time in every silver moment of each whisker on the face that seems indifferent to the paralysis of time...

Drawing streets, drawing folk opera and classical drama in a rustic and innocent way

Painter Nguyen Linh paints first and foremost because of his passion, then comes the search for a style of expression. And he is different from many other painters in that he has never had the urge to paint for money or to make money. That alone makes him a "strange traveler". He loves painting as much as he loves his own being.

I still remember, one morning, Mr. Nguyen Linh invited me and art critic, translator Pham Long to eat pho near Nha Tho street. After that, I suspected that this beautiful alley was hidden in his paintings. In the same way, the subject of his work is the vivid visual world through the eyes and emotions flashing through the colors.

He painted streets, painted traditional operas, and classical plays in a rustic and innocent way. Portraits of artists and writers from Bui Xuan Phai, Nguyen Tuan, Van Cao, Duong Tuong, Luong Xuan Doan... were so beautiful and real that they were like recordings of ordinary people and everyday life. But it did not stop there, the themes of young women, nudes, nature, and writing styles that abandoned the rational and sought the irrational such as surrealism, abstraction, and wild animals... Nguyen Linh's brush was always attentive to them.

Nguyễn Linh mê hội họa như yêu chính bản thể mình

Nguyen Linh loves painting as much as he loves himself.

The huge collection of paintings filling his house shows a terrible passion and a tremendous work force that not every artist is lucky enough to have.

But then I also felt a little worried, wondering if I exhibited all of Nguyen Linh's paintings with all kinds of sizes, materials..., with thousands of paintings, maybe even a dozen exhibitions would not be enough. So in this first launch in Ho Chi Minh City, which paintings will you choose for the audience who love art and paintings to enjoy? With that thought of genuine curiosity, I am also eagerly waiting...

Artist Nguyen Linh's exhibition takes place at An Gallery (159 Dong Khoi, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) from May 5 to 19, curated by artist Trinh Tuan - Director of Hanoi Art Connection.
