Using a quick weight loss product online, a girl was hospitalized for emergency care.

When her weight reached 100 kg, Ms. NGN (19 years old, living in Ho Chi Minh City) used many products advertised for weight loss online. As a result, she had to be hospitalized for emergency treatment due to hypoglycemia and electrolyte imbalance due to acute dehydration.

From malnutrition to obesity, find every way to lose weight

According to her medical history, as a child, N. was a malnourished girl, and her mother constantly took her to nutritionists. During puberty, her weight began to increase steadily. At the age of 19, N. weighed nearly 100 kg, and liked to eat fried and grilled foods and drink soft drinks. Aware of her "flabby" body, N. looked for many ways to lose weight.

At first, N. spent 20 million VND for a 10-session course to melt fat and slim her abdomen and thighs. With body aches but no weight loss, N. switched to drinking celery juice and a functional food powder that cost 4.2 million VND/month. After drinking continuously for 2 months, N. only lost 1 kg.

After that, N. bought 4 boxes of weight loss tea advertised online, each box costing nearly 700,000 VND. After drinking the tea for about a week, 1-2 packs a day, she lost 2 kg immediately, but N. fainted in the middle of class and was taken to the emergency room by her friends.

“At that time, I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia, electrolyte disturbance due to acute dehydration, and signs of acute kidney failure,” N. recounted.

Too scared, N. stopped all the weight loss products she had bought before, and switched to signing up for a gym and dieting. “Each meal I only ate 2 spoons of rice, boiled eggs, boiled shrimp, boiled chicken breast, boiled vegetables… It was very boring but I still had to try,” N. said. After many months of applying this method, N.’s weight also decreased slightly.

Unverified weight loss products often cause diuresis, dehydration, and rapid weight loss.

During a time when she went to get vaccinated against cervical cancer, N. and her mother read information about the multimodal weight loss treatment method of the Weight Loss Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, so they came for consultation.

When to arrive Weight Loss Center, N. weighs 95 kg, is 1.54 m tall, is severely obese, has grade 3 fatty liver, and dyslipidemia.

Dr. Lam Van Hoang, Director of the Weight Loss Center, said that N. is one of the young people who are overweight and obese due to not being able to control their diet and lifestyle. When he learned that N. had to go to the emergency room because of using unverified weight loss products, Dr. Hoang analyzed that the common characteristics of these products are diuretics that cause dehydration and rapid weight loss, which appeals to the psychology of many people who want to lose weight quickly. Some products increase the risk of stroke, high blood pressure, and are especially dangerous because they are toxic and can damage the kidneys and other organs.

To lose weight effectively and safely, patients need to be examined, consulted, and tested by specialized doctors to come up with appropriate weight loss methods.

N. was given a treatment regimen by Dr. Hoang that included medication combined with changes in diet and exercise.

After 2 weeks, N. lost 3 kg and 2 months after the follow-up visit, N. lost 9 kg, down to 86 kg. "This is an unexpected result, I lost weight without feeling tired, without losing strength, very comfortable", N. said.

Weight loss - no one-size-fits-all formula

Dr. Hoang shared that overweight and obesity are caused by many factors such as diet, lack of exercise or endocrine diseases, causing the body to change and disrupt the cycle of converting food into energy and storing fat. Because overweight and obesity are caused by many factors, many overweight and obese patients have failed in treatment if they have not identified the correct cause of the disease and have not had a suitable diet and exercise regimen.

“Individualized treatment helps doctors find the ‘key’, understand the patient, and approach each person to find the right solution. Doctors only adjust the diet and eating habits, not completely change them, and do not disrupt the patient’s life and activities. That way, the success rate is high. There is no general formula for all patients,” said Dr. Hoang.
