The rift between Meghan Markle and stylist and former British Vogue editor Edward Enninful became serious after he failed to arrange for her to appear on the cover of Vogue in September 2022.

Page Six reported that the former royal once gave fashion experts a list of impossible demands, even trying to convince Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

This week, the Daily Mail confirmed that Meghan Markle and Enniful were planning to cover the September 2022 issue of British Vogue , which will feature Meghan Markle's keynote speech at the One Young World Summit in Manchester, England.

However, the plan never materialized. Meghan Markle wanted a “global cover,” appearing simultaneously on the covers of British and American Vogue , along with a list of demands (at the time, Adele was the only celebrity to appear on the covers of both British and American Vogue at the same time in the November 2021 issue).

"No one gets it. Not even Beyoncé," the source added.

Meghan Markle even set up a private Zoom call with Anna Wintour to try to sell her on the idea.

"Anna wasn't too keen," the source said, adding that Vogue already had Serena Williams as its cover star.

Meanwhile, Markle was not on the list. "Meghan asked Anna to have a Zoom chat with her to reconsider, and Anna did it out of politeness," the source said.

However, another source confirmed that Markle never asked Vogue's editorial board to be on the cover and that the magazine actually approached her several times after her wedding to Prince Harry.

Enninful previously invited Markle to cover Forces for Change in 2019, an issue of British Vogue , but she chose to guest-edit it. Markle has also appeared on the digital cover of The Cut (New York).

Sources told the Daily Mail that Markle and Enninful - who left British Vogue in February 2025 - are no longer in contact.

"The Duchess and her team had high expectations and expected her to appear on the print or at least the digital cover, but Enninful could not meet those expectations. The whole negotiation process became very difficult. Enninful could only promise her a featured article in print and online. However, Meghan Markle refused," an insider said.
