GĐXH – According to doctors, lice are common in dogs and cats. When humans come into close contact with dogs and cats, lice can easily crawl over and parasitize many parts of the human body such as the eyelids, genitals, anus, etc.

Recently, doctors at Hiep Hoa District Medical Center (Bac Giang) received and treated a patient with lice clinging to his eyelids.

Accordingly, a 46-year-old female patient came to the hospital with severe eye itching. Medical history revealed that the patient had been experiencing itching in her left eye for about a week, concentrated in the upper eyelid.

Despite using eye drops, the patient's condition did not improve. He became increasingly uncomfortable and felt his eyelids were heavier, so his family took him to see a doctor.

According to Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Tu, Deputy Head of the Interdisciplinary Department, Hiep Hoa District Medical Center, the patient's eyes were examined under a microscope and many eyelash lice were found stuck to the eyelids under the scales. On the eyelashes, lice eggs were strung together.

Immediately, the doctors removed many lice that were stuck to the eyelids, treated dozens of lice eggs on the eyelashes, and instructed the patient on how to clean the eyes to avoid spreading and reinfection.

Previously, in May 2024, a nearly 3-year-old boy in Phu Ninh district ( Phu Tho ) was also taken to the doctor by his family because of severe eye itching.

After examining and examining the eyes under a microscope, doctors at Phu Ninh District Medical Center discovered that under the scales of the eyelashes there were many lice and lice eggs, densely attached to the eyelashes on both eyes, the eggs strung together.

Or the case of a 51-year-old woman in Long An who also had itching around her eyelids, when she went to see a doctor at Xuyen A Long An General Hospital, doctors discovered dozens of lice clinging to this area. The patient had all the lice and lice eggs removed and was instructed on how to clean them at home.

Be careful of lice spreading from dogs and cats.

Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Tu said that lice are common in dogs and cats. When humans come into close contact with dogs and cats, lice can easily crawl over. Lice live and lay eggs in moist areas such as the eyes, anus, and genitals. Lice bite into human skin to suck blood continuously for many hours, and saliva secreted from the lice's mouth causes itching and discomfort. Therefore, one of the easily recognizable symptoms of parasitic lice is itching in the damaged skin area.

Itching begins about 1-2 weeks after being infected with lice. Itching usually ranges from mild to severe, especially at night. When the patient scratches, it will accidentally create scratches on the skin, creating conditions for bacteria to enter and cause inflammation and ulcers.

If pubic lice are on the eyelashes, their feces and saliva can cause conjunctivitis or keratitis. Eyelash lice can be transmitted through direct contact with an infected person or indirectly through clothing and towels.

Lice reproduce rapidly, causing discomfort, risk of infection in the parasitic area, reducing the quality of life of the patient. In addition, lice can spread to people around, especially those living in the same house.

How to prevent lice infestation

Experts recommend that to prevent lice infection, people should limit close contact with dogs and cats, and keep their living space clean. Use some antibacterial shower gels and shampoos to help eliminate lice. Clothes, bed sheets, pillowcases and towels should be washed, dried and air-dried to eliminate the risk of harboring lice.

When there are signs of itching, discomfort in the eyes, genitals, anus, armpits... you need to go to a medical facility for examination. In case of detecting parasitic lice on the body, you need to see a doctor to remove the lice and use some prescribed medications.

Treatment is needed for the patient and family members to completely resolve the problem, avoiding the spread and reinfection of lice.
