Azerbaijan has declared a national day of mourning for those killed in the crash of its passenger plane in Kazakhstan on December 25, and opened a criminal investigation into the incident.

On December 25, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree declaring December 26 a national day of mourning in Azerbaijan to commemorate the victims killed in the plane crash.
An AZAL Embraer 190 aircraft carrying 67 passengers and crew members from the Azerbaijani capital Baku to Grozny in Russia crashed near Kazakhstan's Aktau airport. Among the passengers and crew were 37 Azerbaijanis, 16 Russians, 6 Kazakhs and 3 Kyrgyzstanis.
According to Azerbaijan Airlines , preliminary information shows that the plane had to make an emergency landing after hitting a flock of birds. The Azerbaijan Prosecutor General's Office announced that 32 people survived the tragedy.
The Azerbaijan Prosecutor General's Office has opened a criminal investigation under Articles 262.3 (violation of traffic safety and air transport operation regulations, resulting in negligence resulting in more than 2 deaths) and 314.3 (negligence resulting in more than 2 deaths).
Russian experts also conducted a separate criminal investigation into possible violations of air transport safety during the crashed flight.
In a social media post, Azerbaijani President Aliyev expressed his deepest condolences to the families of those who died in the accident and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
President Aliyev, who was in Russia for a summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), returned home immediately after being informed of the crash and ordered a full investigation. A high-level delegation from Azerbaijan has departed for Aktau, Kazakhstan, to oversee the investigation.
On the same day, the presidents of Russia, Iran, and Serbia also sent condolences to the people of Azerbaijan and their counterpart Ilham Aliyev after the tragic plane crash.
