The results of the 46th translation competition were announced on the official website of the American Literary Translators Association. The organizers called Nguyen An Ly's translation a "miracle". Her translation was awarded in the prose category, along with another category for poetry. The winner will receive $4,000.

Thuan's work Chinatown was introduced to readers a long time ago, and was later "reissued" by Nha Nam company.
Before translating her first work, Chinatown , from Vietnamese to English, she translated a series of works from famous authors into Vietnamese such as Margaret Atwood, George Orwell, Kazuo Ishiguro, Borges...
Some of the typical translations that Nguyen An Ly has translated into Vietnamese include The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro, Aleph by Jorge Luis Borges, poems in The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien... Up to now, she owns an impressive "translation fortune" with more than 20 translations of different works spanning many genres.
Thuan's novel is not too long, fits in the hand, and is very engaging to read. The whole story takes place in two hours, when a woman recalls her life with many ups and downs while stuck on a train.
The National Translation Awards are presented annually to outstanding translators who have contributed to English-language literature through creative translations. The next awards season will take place in January 2024.
