Nguyen Thuy Linh repeats her feat of defeating former world champion at 2025 Badminton Championship

(NLDO) - Vietnam's No. 1 badminton player Nguyen Thuy Linh made her mark at the 2025 World Badminton Championships when she defeated former world champion Ratchanok Intanon for the second time.

The lucky draw brought Nguyen Thuy Linh (ranked 22nd in the world ) to face world number 10 Ratchanok Intanon in the first round of the women's singles at the 2025 Badminton World Championship, taking place in France.

However, Vietnam's number 1 female tennis player played explosively, demonstrating a persistent style of play, versatile control of the ball, and effective finishing moves, when she excellently won the first set 21-17.

In the second set, Ratchanok Intanon tried to equalize the score but Thuy Linh still maintained her concentration. The tricky shots helped the Dong Nai native create an important gap, before closing the match with a 21-18 victory, securing a 2-0 victory.

This is the second time in her career that Thuy Linh has defeated the former 2013 world champion - Ratchanok Intanon, after a 2-0 win in January 2024. In the second round, Thuy Linh will meet player Kirsty Gilmour (Scotland, ranked 31st in the world).

In the men's doubles, Nguyen Dinh Hoang-Tran Dinh Manh (ranked 126th in the world) also created a surprise when they defeated the duo Batalha-Voigt (ranked 116th) with a score of 2-0 (22-20, 21-16) to gain the right to enter the second round, where they will face 16th seeds Lee Jhe-Huei-Yang Po-Hsuan (Taiwan - China).

Meanwhile, men's singles player Le Duc Phat (ranked 69) stopped in the first round after losing 1-2 to Julien Carraggi (Belgium, ranked 59), despite having beaten this opponent at the Malaysian tournament.

This afternoon and evening, August 26, Vu Thi Thuy Trang and Nguyen Hai Dang will enter the opening matches of the women's and men's singles.
