Journalist Ho Xuan Son looked straight into the harsh nature of journalism with two concepts: "Journalist's profession", "Editor-in-Chief's profession"... And in his role as head of the Capital Party newspaper, he left an indelible mark when leading Hanoi Moi to rise up in the country's innovation wind with many outstanding successes.
A talented and experienced journalist
Ho Xuan Son is one of the few journalists who are well-trained and have rich professional experience. He graduated from the Faculty of Literature, University of General Sciences, studied at Nguyen Ai Quoc Academy, and has a PhD in Philosophy (later a PhD) from the AON High-Level Party School in the former Soviet Union. He worked as a resident reporter in Nam Dinh during the period when the US was fiercely bombing the North, was the Head of the Frontline Reporter Team, followed the Ho Chi Minh Campaign, and was present at the Independence Palace on the evening of April 30, 1975, on the day when "the country was filled with joy"... He worked as a journalist, did research, and taught. The school and the battlefield created a unique style for journalist Ho Xuan Son.
Those who come into contact with him are often attracted by the elegant demeanor of a man rich in knowledge and experience. Not intimate in a family way, he often keeps a distance that is just enough for politeness without being formal. Those who work directly with journalist Ho Xuan Son all feel his serious attitude to know that they must surpass themselves and be more meticulous.
With his own ability to discover , journalist Ho Xuan Son always seeks new things, aiming for new factors. He was one of the first people to introduce the "child prodigy" Tran Dang Khoa with his pure, innocent but profound poems like a philosopher. He was also the one who discovered and wrote about Vuong Dinh Cung, the only son of the Secretary of the Hung Yen Provincial Party Committee, a "Paven Corsaghin" full of ambition, ideals, the pride of the Northern youth during the years of resistance against the US... Along with his "lifetime" works in many different journalism genres, in his position as a researcher, journalist Ho Xuan Son looked straight at the harsh nature of journalism with the two concepts "Journalist's profession" and "Editor-in-Chief's profession" bringing many thoughts to many generations of writers and managers of press agencies.
Understanding the profession and understanding life, journalist Ho Xuan Son respects the personality and style of his colleagues, so that each person can develop their strengths on each page. Under his leadership, Hanoi Moi has gathered many talented and equally sharp journalists such as Tran Chien, Nguyen Trieu, Vuong Thuc, Vuong Tam, Cam Binh, Nguyen Ngoc Tien... They are the ones who have created the style and reputation of Hanoi Moi Newspaper in the hearts of readers during the renovation period.
Selected by Editor-in-Chief Ho Xuan Son when the seniors were at their peak in terms of style and career to train, to us, he is a polite, enthusiastic leader and above all, willing to go all the way, taking full responsibility for the work of his colleagues. This is truly a great source of strength for young journalists to firmly walk on a path full of pride but also many challenges.
Typically, in late 1996 and early 1997, a group of reporters led by journalist Nguyen Trieu, Head of the Hanoi Moi Sunday Department, wrote a series of investigative articles reflecting negative behaviors at Vietnam Airlines. The company reacted strongly to the "earth-shattering" information, suing Hanoi Moi Newspaper and the author in court. The atmosphere in the agency was as tense as a bowstring with many rumors. Editor-in-Chief Ho Xuan Son stood side by side with his colleagues to collect documents, ready to "appear in court" and take responsibility as the leader. In the end, the truth still belongs to the true journalists. This incident is a valuable experience for many journalists, very necessary for the current fight against corruption, negativity, and waste.
The marks of new thinking
The wind of innovation brings new opportunities, but finding a way in the market storm is not simple, especially for local press. From the observation: "Local press has a direct impact on the thoughts and feelings of local people, can go deep into each individual subject, from local customs to practices. From there, if the newspaper performs well and fulfills its function, it will make an important contribution to encouraging and motivating the revolutionary movement of the masses, becoming a close spiritual friend of party members and people...", Editor-in-Chief Ho Xuan Son and his colleagues gradually shaped Hanoi Moi Newspaper in the whirlpool of challenges from the movements of the times.
The bold mark in the renovation of Editor-in-Chief Ho Xuan Son was the launch of two new publications (April 2, 1995). The Hanoi Moi Weekend newspaper is rich in culture, carrying the soul of Thang Long - Hanoi. In addition to the thousand-year-old cultural flow, the content on literature, art, fashion... is increasingly prominent. Hanoi Moi Sunday (launched in April 1989) returned to the true meaning of a daily newspaper, switching to a new series with a style close to all aspects of economic and social life. And, the monthly Hanoi Today, full of stories to discover and ponder, has affirmed its own position in the system of publications called Hanoi Moi.
Along with “One Story a Day” which has been familiar to readers as a “specialty”, Hanoi Moi launched a series of columns: “Through the Villages”, “The Land and Customs of the Homeland”, “Hanoi Miscellaneous Literature”, “Life Puzzles”, “Sunday Rest”, “Forum for Building the Capital”, “Hanoi People”, “Enjoying Art”…, attracting the participation and collaboration of researchers, experts, artists and the attention and love of readers nationwide.
Escaping the subsidy mechanism, bureaucracy, stagnation, negativity, corruption is rampant again. Under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Ho Xuan Son, Hanoimoi is sensitive with bold headlines: "The city deploys a plan to fight corruption", "Hanoi Customs fights smuggling and implements Directive 278". Then the column "What to do to fight corruption" continuously publishes articles of an exchange nature on economic management... There are also close issues mentioned such as how far the fight against corruption goes, "bathing from the shoulders down" or "not sparing any level or sector? And with sharp, non-threatening anti-negativity articles such as "Shipping glasses to side A", "Fly up"..., Hanoimoi has affirmed its capacity and position in the revolutionary press.
From journalistic works closely associated with the life of the Capital and containing the social responsibility of a Party newspaper, Hanoi Moi has come closer and left a deep impression on readers.
With a long-term vision, along with opening a representative office in Ho Chi Minh City, reaching out to the South, Editor-in-Chief Ho Xuan Son focuses on connecting with local Party newspapers: Saigon Giai Phong, Thua Thien - Hue, Hai Phong..., creating more room and opportunities for development in both professional and economic fields of journalism. The number of publications increased, advertising activities were flexible, bringing in large revenues, for journalists in the common house of Hanoi Moi, the time of "running around for every meal and sweating" sank deep into the past.
It can be said that with his strong energy, Editor-in-Chief Ho Xuan Son has left his mark on many areas of journalism and in the hearts of his colleagues.
