Design honors West Lake culture and history

According to the decision of the Hanoi People's Committee, the Hanoi Opera House and 7 other investment projects and works will start construction in early October 2025. The groundbreaking ceremony of the projects not only celebrates the historical anniversary but also concretizes the development orientation of Hanoi's infrastructure, health , culture and transportation.

Hanoi Opera House, also known as the Pearl Theater, is a special architectural work, imbued with the culture and history of the capital. The work was designed by architect Renzo Piano (Italy). It can be said that after many years of researching Hanoi, Renzo was especially interested in the beauty of West Lake. Realizing that this place not only has beautiful natural scenery but also many historical stories that need to be preserved, the famous Italian architect decided to put all of that quintessence into the design of the Hanoi Opera House.

The characteristic curved dome of the Hanoi Opera House was inspired by the rolling waves on the surface of West Lake. Not only that, the architect also decided to preserve all historical relics and heritages in the West Lake area, such as Hoang An Pagoda, Pho Linh Pagoda, Kim Nguu Temple - Tay Ho Palace... and cover them with green gardens planned as walking paths.

Ponds and lakes around the area such as the lotus pond of Pho Linh Pagoda, Thuy Su Lake... will be invested in cleaning, renovating, restoring and planting West Lake lotus to synchronize with the entire park area. Thus, the space around the theater will be enriched to become more sacred and "green". The surface of the theater dome is covered with a layer of pearl-effect ceramic, helping to reflect the lighting effect in real time. From afar, the project will sparkle on the surface of West Lake, like a shining gem in the heart of the city. In other words, the appearance of the Hanoi Opera House is not simply an architectural work with a unique idea for the first time in Vietnam, but also a highlight to honor the cultural and historical values of Hanoi.

Enhancing artistic life, promoting the capital's economy

The most important difference of Hanoi Opera House is its international standard professionalism. The theater also has a museum and a multi-purpose auditorium with functional rooms, serving many different types of performing arts such as opera, concerts, ballet, music festivals... The theater's techniques and technology can meet the most demanding performance standards of top international music stars.

It is known that the Hanoi Opera House will have a total investment of about 10,000 billion VND, invested by SunGroup in the form of socialization, under the strict control of Hanoi city throughout the design, construction and operation process. This is a clear demonstration of the role of private enterprises in cultural development.

The fact that a private enterprise sought out architect Renzo Piano, which is like choosing to “stand on the shoulders of a giant” of the world’s architecture industry to design a theater, has brought a great opportunity for Vietnam to have a worthy work of art. Architect Renzo Piano said that with the Hanoi Opera House, he wishes to contribute to building an iconic theater for Vietnam, and put it on the list of the most famous theaters in the world such as in Paris, Milan, Berlin, London, New York, Los Angeles...
