With a scale of 19.1 hectares and a total investment of 12,756 billion VND, this is also a rare large-scale cultural and artistic project built with 100% socialized capital from Sun Group.
The entire design, construction and operation process is closely managed and supervised by Hanoi city.
At the event, Comrade Nguyen Xuan Thang - Member of the Politburo, Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics expressed his emotion when the Hanoi Opera House will be ranked among the most famous theaters in the world: "This is where the world's quintessence converges, the world's most outstanding advances converge, and where we can enjoy famous art programs around the world. But at the same time, this is also the place to spread the cultural values of Vietnam and the talents of Vietnamese people to the world. We hope that this is proof of the beginning, to have more modern cultural works, so that the capital Hanoi is worthy of being a civilized, modern, green and beautiful capital".
Comrade Nguyen Xuan Thang also affirmed that the project with investment from Sun Group Corporation has thoroughly grasped Resolution 68 of the Politburo on private economic development as the most important driving force of the economy, diversifying resources, forms of public-private partnership and forms of private investment using social resources to serve the interests of all people.
International "art cathedral"
The Hanoi Opera House was designed by Italian architectural legend Renzo Piano, one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. As the first Italian to be included in the Top 100 most influential people in the world, Renzo Piano has received many prestigious awards during his 60-year career, such as the Pritzker Prize, considered the Nobel Prize of architecture.
The Hanoi Opera House project is considered a stroke of luck for Vietnam, when the legendary Renzo Piano, 88 years old and 67 years in the profession, chose to dedicate his life's accumulated quintessence to design.
Unable to attend the Groundbreaking ceremony, Italian architectural legend Renzo Piano sent a special message and feelings for the project he devoted so much to: “Although I cannot be with you today, my heart is still here. I send all my best wishes and complete joy for this special day. I love this project, and I believe this is the project I love the most.
Because this project is related to music, and music is my passion. And the Theater is an island, a place that always carries magic. In the midst of the waves, this musical island will be more beautiful and full of miracles.
The best thing for me is to create a project where people can come together, listen to music, enjoy and share happiness."
With a total floor area of approximately 40,980 m² (excluding parking and technical areas), nearly 6 times the area of an 11-a-side football field, the Theatre has two large auditoriums including the grand auditorium. Opera auditorium (capacity of 1,797 seats) and a multi-purpose auditorium with a mobile seating system that can be moved to create space for standing events such as live music performances, concerts, etc., with a capacity of 1,430 standing seats and 216 balcony seats.
In addition to the two auditoriums, the Theater also has many other multi-purpose spaces such as the Main Hall, Rehearsal and Practice Room, Museum... This will not only be a place that can serve many different types of performing arts such as symphony concerts, Broadway-style music performances, classical opera and ballet, award ceremonies, Gala, large-scale entertainment performances..., but also a space for cultural and artistic exchange and entertainment for the capital's people.
The most distinctive feature of the theater is its “unprecedented” dome architecture, inspired by pearls rising from the surface of West Lake, with a super thin, super strong structure and covered with a layer of material that creates a pearl effect, so that it can reflect the color of West Lake's surface according to the movement of time during the day.
Built to host world-class art shows and be the destination of world-famous artists, the Hanoi Opera House is expected to be on the list of the world's most famous art cathedrals in Paris, Milan, Berlin, London, New York, Los Angeles, etc. This will also be a project that demonstrates the values and cultural connections of the world with Vietnamese culture, bringing Vietnam to the world.
Elevating the capital's status in the new era
Not only is Hanoi a sacred land of history, the political - cultural - economic center of the country, it is also the cradle of many unique cultural values, the spiritual cultural center of the nation.
In addition to preserving the long-standing cultural values of the capital, investing in the development of new cultural institutions such as large-scale theaters, museums, national stages, and a series of key projects such as renovating and building parks on both sides of the To Lich River... are considered important milestones for Hanoi to change its appearance, "becoming a model Socialist Capital, developing on 5 pillars, with culture and people being placed in the first place", as directed by General Secretary To Lam in a working session with the Standing Committee of the Hanoi Party Committee on August 9, 2024.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Duong Duc Tuan - Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee emphasized that in the Hanoi Capital Planning for the period 2021 - 2030, vision to 2050 and Adjustment of the Capital Master Plan to 2045, vision to 2065, culture and heritage are identified as one of the five important development pillars.
In the context of deep international integration, investing in iconic cultural works is of great significance: affirming the position of the thousand-year-old capital, while promoting the image of Vietnam as innovative, creative, humane, integrated and sustainably developed.
“This is a deeply humane project, aiming to serve the community, not for profit and using socialized capital - very rare in the world, because most large theaters are invested or sponsored by the State.
The fact that Sun Group Corporation - one of the leading private enterprises pioneering in investment, has shown its desire to create a complex of typical cultural works, modern, new architecture, of international stature, demonstrating the aspiration to rise up" - Mr. Duong Duc Tuan affirmed.
With the Hanoi Opera House project, Italian architectural legend Renzo Piano spent many years researching the historical culture of Hanoi before coming up with the design idea. He brought Hanoi's inspiration into the design of the theater with a soft West Lake wave-shaped dome, and created more green space for the land associated with historical and cultural heritage.
Ponds and lakes around the area such as the lotus pond of Pho Linh pagoda, Thuy Su lake... will be invested in cleaning, renovating, restoring and planting West Lake lotus to synchronize with the entire park area.
West Lake will also have 8 boat piers and water tourism routes, including a boat pier right near the theater so that people and tourists can conveniently access this iconic cultural and artistic work.
With the investment in space following the green philosophy and honoring the cultural and historical values of the capital, the project complex is expected to become an international art destination, a world-class cultural and entertainment park, bringing to the capital's residents an attractive entertainment spot and an iconic building that world tourists must visit, just as they hope to see the Australian Opera House with their own eyes.
Sharing about the project, Mr. Dang Minh Truong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sun Group, affirmed that this is a mission - a special honor for Sun Group, a gratitude of the children born and raised in Hanoi, to create a cultural symbol for the capital and the country.
“We are living in an era of strong national development - an era of rapid and sustainable development for a rich, powerful, prosperous, civilized and happy Vietnam. This is an era where people are placed at the center, where every citizen has the right to enjoy the values of development and scholarly literature. The construction of the Hanoi Opera House is a step that demonstrates the aspiration to make Vietnam confident, self-reliant, and in step with the world” - Mr. Dang Minh Truong shared at the event.
Accompanying Sun Group to build this extremely challenging project complex, at the groundbreaking ceremony, Vietcombank presented a Letter of Credit Approval to implement the project investment. More than just a financial partner, Vietcombank's support demonstrates a belief and willingness to contribute to an iconic project of the capital Hanoi.
Hanoi Opera House is expected to be completed in 2027.
