Pre-match review
A thrilling victory over AC Milan in the Coppa Italia final has brought Bologna their first domestic trophy in 51 years. This historic title also officially ensures the Rossoblu a ticket to next season's UEFA Europa League, regardless of Serie A ranking.
Currently, Bologna is ranked 8th with 62 points, three points behind the 6th-placed team Lazio. In theory, they still have a chance to break into the top 6 if they win all 3 points in the final round, at the same time Lazio loses and Fiorentina (ranked 7) drops points. However, with a ticket to the European Cup already in hand, Bologna can enter the final round without having to feel pressured about the result.
Genoa, meanwhile, travel to the Renato Dall'Ara in poor form and low spirits. Patrick Vieira's side have gone six games without a win in Serie A, including four defeats. Their lack of attacking flair was evident in the goalless draw with Verona and the humiliating defeats to Lazio and Como.
Worse, Genoa have twice let the lead slip in recent defeats against AC Milan (1-2) and Atalanta (2-3), matches in which they led 1-0 and 2-1 respectively, but were unable to hold on.
However, Genoa still have reason to be confident when facing Bologna. The Ligurian team is currently on a five-match unbeaten streak at the Renato Dall'Ara, including two wins and three draws. If Genoa can continue to maintain this impressive away form, they can hope to end the season with a positive result.
In terms of rankings, this match no longer has much meaning for Genoa. With 40 points after 37 rounds, they have secured their place in the rankings and are currently ranked 13th on the table. The gap with Udinese (ranked above) and Cagliari (ranked below) is 4 points, which cannot be filled or evened in the final round.
Form, head-to-head history
Despite no longer being under pressure to get results, Bologna are determined to avoid a third consecutive defeat in Serie A – something they have not experienced since January 2022, when they suffered three consecutive defeats against Cagliari (1-2), Napoli (0-2) and Hellas Verona (1-2). Bologna have recently lost 1-3 to AC Milan and 2-3 to Fiorentina, putting coach Thiago Motta and his team at risk of repeating the forgettable streak from more than two years ago.
Not only do they want to end their slump, the Renato Dall'Ara team are also motivated by the goal of improving their head-to-head record against Genoa, an opponent they have only beaten once in their last 11 encounters. That victory came in February 2018, when Bologna won 2-0 and completed the double against Genoa that season.
Force information
Bologna are without Juan Miranda due to suspension, while Jens Odgaard and Martin Erlic are still recovering from injuries.
Meanwhile, Genoa are without Maxwel Cornet, Alan Matturro, Fabio Miretti, Honest Ahanor and Ruslan Malinovskyi due to injury.
