Along with the increased awareness of drowning prevention in the community, in recent years, many associations, centers, units, and localities in Da Nang city have actively and practically supported parents and students by opening free swimming classes.
According to a survey from swimming centers in Da Nang city, the age of students learning to swim has been "younger".
For example, if in the past parents often sent their children to school from the age of 7 to 10 years old or older, now many children from 3 years old are taken by their parents to register for swimming lessons.
This has shown the effectiveness of social media work in promoting drowning prevention, raising understanding and awareness for both children and adults in health training.
Ms. Ha Thi Thom (Tran Quoc Toan Street, Hai Chau District) shared: “Every time the media reports on drowning accidents and deaths, my family gets worried, so this summer my two children, a 3.5-year-old and a 6-year-old, have been taking turns taking their parents to swimming classes.
Children who learn to swim early not only equip themselves with life skills, most importantly the ability to protect themselves in dangerous and emergency situations, but also improve their health and prepare their physical strength for the new school year.
Going to swimming class with her child, Ms. Thom said that during swimming lessons, children learn many important skills, such as how to float on their backs when falling into the water to breathe and call for help, or swim to shore, along with different swimming styles... which makes parents feel very secure.

Taking his child to swimming lessons at the DAT Center, Mr. Nguyen Thuan (Tran Phu Street, Da Nang City) said that he decided to take his child to swimming lessons when he was 5 years old: "Children's drowning deaths are a common pain for the whole society, making all parents worried, and taking children to swimming lessons is the best way to prevent accidents from the dangers of lakes, ponds, and rivers."
By the end of 2023, Da Nang will have 86 free swimming pools at schools with more than 300 swimming teachers.
Along with social needs, swimming teaching centers and units in Da Nang also have meaningful activities through free swimming lessons.
Since the beginning of July, the Youth Union of Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports has coordinated with Lien Chieu District Youth Union to open a "Free Swimming Class" for students in difficult circumstances.
Each week, students have 3 swimming lessons, each lasting 1 hour. During the lessons, students are taught how to warm up before swimming, swimming skills, how to float safely in water, and how to give first aid to drowning people.
To make swimming classes effective, Danang University of Physical Education and Sports arranges experienced teachers to support students in learning the correct swimming method and techniques to avoid swimming accidents such as cramps and swimming into whirlpools.

In the summer of 2024, Da Nang Children's Palace is organizing 2 free swimming courses for disadvantaged children in the city. Local Youth Unions and Associations will also flexibly organize training classes on safe swimming, drowning prevention, etc.
Implementing the movement "Practical actions, prioritizing resources for children", the People's Committee of Thuan Phuoc Ward (Hai Chau District) organized the opening ceremony of "Free swimming class" for children in difficult circumstances in the ward.
The class takes place at 6pm every day, with Vo Thi Sau Primary School (Hai Chau District) providing free swimming instructors and locations.
It is known that in recent years, the Hai Chau District Cultural and Sports Center has regularly opened summer swimming classes for disadvantaged children in the district, however, many children in difficult circumstances have difficulty traveling because the road is too far. Therefore, the ward has proactively mobilized schools with swimming pools and swimming teachers to support disadvantaged students in the locality.
In Hoa Vang district, there are 28 swimming pools located in primary and secondary schools, each pool costs 96 million VND, allocated by the district budget to the schools. Children participating in swimming lessons are completely free.
Since 2007, An Phuoc Primary School, Hoa Vang District has organized swimming lessons for students. They are equipped with knowledge as well as first aid skills in case of drowning. According to Mr. Ho Quang, a teacher at An Phuoc Primary School, Hoa Vang District, many students register for swimming lessons, from 180 to 240 per course, at the end of the course they are awarded certificates.
The People's Committee of Hoa Vang district has allocated budget for schools to organize free swimming lessons for students, through the district Department of Education and Training, assigning qualified teachers to ensure that students have the best swimming skills.
