Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, predicts that the entire industry could bring in more than 5.5 billion USD in exports for the whole year of 2023, with only three months remaining.
Among the top 10 largest markets for the fruit and vegetable industry, besides China, Japan, South Korea, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates experienced positive growth; while the US, Thailand, and Australia saw a decrease in imports.
Conversely, according to preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam imported 360,625 tons of wheat in August, worth over $114.9 million, an increase of 8% in volume and 3.4% in value compared to July. In the first eight months of the year, imports of this commodity reached over 3.1 million tons with a value exceeding $1.1 billion, an increase of 9.2% in volume and 1.5% in value compared to the same period in 2022. Notably, the average import price was very low, only $352 per ton, a decrease of 7.1% compared to the same period.
In particular, wheat imports from the US surged in August, reaching 87,046 tons, valued at $31.7 million, representing increases of 13,760% in volume and 13,286% in value compared to July 2023. Overall, in the first eight months of the year, imports of this commodity from the US reached 259,291 tons with a value of over $102.24 million, an increase of 100.6% in volume and 75.8% in value compared to the same period in 2022.
