As usual, the New Year tuna auction in Japan always attracts a lot of attention.
In the first tuna auction of the year at Toyosu fish market in Tokyo on January 5, a 238 kg bluefin tuna caught off Oma, Aomori, was sold for 114.24 million yen (789,000 USD).
This price became the fourth highest price in the history of Japan's New Year tuna auction since 1999.
The winning bid was jointly bid by Tokyo-based wholesaler Yamayuki and restaurant chain operator Ginza Onodera, which far exceeded last year's 36.04 million yen.
The record price in the first tuna auctions of the year was 333.6 million yen paid for a 278-kg tuna in 2019 - this was also the first auction to take place at Toyosu after Tokyo's main fish market moved there from Tsukiji.
"I feel the economy is recovering, so I think the bid will reach 100 million yen. The deciding factor for this price is the freshness and vibrant color of the tuna. We are grateful to the fishermen who braved the cold to catch it," said Yamayuki President Yukitaka Yamaguchi.
The tuna auction, held at one of Tokyo's most popular tourist spots, began at around 5:10 a.m. local time with tuna on display and bidders and sellers busily exchanging goods.
The meat cut from the tuna that Yamayuki and Sushi Ginza Onodera bought will also be sold at food stores in Tokyo./.
