(CLO) Japan and the Philippines have signed a security aid agreement worth 1.6 billion yen (10.65 million USD) to strengthen the Philippines' naval power amid the increasingly complicated security situation in the East Sea.
Both the Philippines and Japan, two of America’s closest allies in Asia, have stepped up security cooperation, with Japan providing the Philippine Navy with equipment such as rigid-hulled inflatable boats and coastal radar systems.
"This project is expected to contribute to maintaining and strengthening regional security and enhancing the security of important sea lanes, and will be of significance to Japan's security," the Japanese Embassy in Manila said.

The statement added that the Philippine Air Force will also receive equipment to support its air traffic surveillance radar system, enhancing its maritime surveillance capabilities.
“The enhanced security cooperation reflects the shared commitment of Japan and the Philippines to regional peace and stability,” the Philippine Department of National Defense said in a statement.
In July, the Philippines and Japan signed a landmark military pact that allows the deployment of military forces on each other's territory, boosting military cooperation between the two countries.
