According to a report from the Wall Street Journal , Apple CEO Tim Cook is said to have developed a simple yet effective strategy for communicating with President-elect Donald Trump, which has resulted in significant benefits for the iPhone maker.
CEO Tim Cook's simple but effective approaches to Donald Trump for Apple
The relationship between CEO Tim Cook and Donald Trump is not simple. Despite public disagreements, such as Trump calling for a boycott of Apple after blocking the FBI from unlocking an iPhone linked to the San Bernardino shooting, and Cook opposing Trump’s immigration policies, the two have maintained a dialogue. Cook believes that engaging in conversation, even when there is disagreement, can lead to positive outcomes.
Two methods applied by CEO Tim Cook
The first is “personal interactions,” where instead of going through lobbyists, Mr. Cook has directly communicated with Mr. Trump via phone calls and private dinners. The second is “targeted discussions,” where in meetings, Mr. Cook focuses on a specific issue, using a single data point to keep the conversation simple and productive.
“You don’t change things by yelling,” Cook stressed. “We change things by showing people why our way of doing things is the best way.” That tactic worked in negotiations that led to an exemption from tariffs on Chinese imports for Apple products. Cook also recently expressed his concerns to Trump about antitrust investigations.
However, replicating Cook’s approach could be difficult for other CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, with two factors being key. The first is “brand recognition,” as Apple has a strong global brand position, which makes it easier for Cook to reach out to Trump. The second is “access to Trump,” as other CEOs may struggle to establish a personal relationship with the incoming US president, which could impact their ability to set the agenda.
Obviously, not everyone can achieve the success of Mr. Tim Cook or Elon Musk - who is currently a close advisor to the president-elect. In the coming time, we will monitor the reaction of the media as well as Mr. Trump's "new friends".
