Ho Chi Minh City aims to build a sustainable economy
On September 24, Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee opened the 2nd Friendship Dialogue - 2024 (FD 2024) at Gem Center, 8 Nguyen Binh Khiem (District 1).
Attending the opening ceremony were Politburo member - Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Van Nen; Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Hang; leaders of more than 35 cities around the world: United States, Russia, Japan, Belarus, China, Korea, Cuba, Germany, Hungary, Portugal, Uruguay, Australia, Laos, Cambodia...; international organizations and business associations of countries and countries in the country.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of FD 2024, Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Phan Van Mai said that the theme of FD 2024 is "Industrial transformation: Development experience and cooperation priorities". According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), industrial transformation has become a global trend, with investment in high technology and digital expected to reach about 1.5 trillion USD by 2030. We are living in a period of profound industrial transformation, where innovation and sustainable development are becoming decisive factors for success.
According to statistics, the proportion of high-tech industries currently accounts for only about 23% of the city's total GDP, the city's goal is to increase this proportion to 40% by 2030. Also according to Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Phan Van Mai, according to a report by McKinsey & Company, about 70% of multinational companies have committed to cutting at least 25% of their carbon emissions by 2030. Therefore, to maintain a strong presence in the global market, the city needs to meet these standards.
“According to research by the World Economic Forum, about 60% of successful industrial transformation initiatives are the result of cooperation between governments, businesses and people, both domestically and internationally. We hope that through FD 2024, localities, businesses and people will have more opportunities to exchange and cooperate to develop together more strongly,” said Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Phan Van Mai.
Foreign countries promote the role of private enterprises
Speaking at the opening session of FD 2024, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Hang highly appreciated Ho Chi Minh City's initiative to maintain the organization of the dialogue, demonstrating the city's positivity, proactiveness, and creativity in foreign affairs. We highly appreciate the theme of the dialogue, demonstrating sharp thinking, accurately grasping the development trends of the times, and the requirements placed on Ho Chi Minh City as well as cities and economic centers of countries around the world.
“We need to build models and cooperation methods to jointly create an industrial transformation ecosystem. Through FD 2024, partner cities will share practical experiences and promote new cooperation ideas with Ho Chi Minh City to make industrial transformation a growth driver for the city in the coming period,” said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Hang.
At FD 2024, Mr. Stefano Lo Russo - Mayor of Torino (Italy) shared that industrial transformation can be achieved thanks to regular dialogues between the government, businesses and educational institutions.
“In this context, the cooperation between Torino and Ho Chi Minh City is not only an opportunity, but also a necessity to face the challenges of the times. Ho Chi Minh City, a large and vibrant metropolis, is facing challenges in sustainable urban growth. Working together to solve these problems, exchanging knowledge and solutions, not only strengthens the relationship but also creates new development opportunities for our localities and for the young generation. In this context, the role of businesses is very important, playing a key role in implementing the innovation and sustainability strategies that the cities promote”, said Mr. Stefano Lo Russo - Mayor of Torino.
