On March 5, the US Court of Appeals in Washington (USA) said that five major technology companies of this country did not violate the accusation of supporting the use of child labor at cobalt mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to a VNA correspondent in Africa, in a lawsuit filed by former child miners and their representatives, Alphabet - the parent company of Google, Apple, Dell Technologies, Microsoft and Tesla - is accused of facilitating the use of child labor in its cobalt supply chain.
Cobalt is a metal used to make lithium-ion batteries widely used in electronics. The plaintiffs allege that U.S. companies knew about the use of child labor in cobalt mines but did nothing for fear of disrupting the supply of the metal.
However, in the US Court of Appeals ruling, tech corporations only maintain commercial relationships with their suppliers and they do not have the right to prevent the use of child labor.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is the world's largest producer of cobalt. According to the United Nations, more than 40,000 children are working in dangerous conditions in cobalt mines in the country's Katanga province alone./.
