Vo Ngoc Phuong Trinh - a student at Duc Hoa High School ( Long An ) - applied for a major in business administration at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade but was not accepted but was accepted into a private university. After much deliberation, Trinh decided not to enroll in university but to switch to college, also in the private group.
Choose college to reduce tuition
According to Trinh, the biggest reason comes from the cost. The university tuition at the school Trinh was admitted to is more than 17 million VND per semester, much higher than the rate of about 10 million VND per semester at the college level. In addition, Trinh said that studying at university also comes with many other expenses.
At college, Trinh chose to study accounting. Trinh plans that if she studies well, she can continue her studies to improve her ability. If not, completing college and starting work early is also a stable path. For Trinh, this flexibility in choice helps reduce financial pressure and opens up a direction that suits her actual ability.
Similarly, Le Bao Quyen - a student at Tre Viet Primary, Secondary and High School (HCMC) - was admitted to the accounting major at a public university in HCMC. Quyen's biggest concern is also the cost. In her first semester at this university, Quyen estimated that all the fees she had to pay, including tuition, would be 20 million VND. With this fee, Quyen said that her family would have difficulty meeting it.
Quyen chose to study pharmacy at Far East College. The geographical distance from home was also a factor that made Quyen "turn around". Quyen is not too concerned about the notion that college is "inferior" to university because, according to her, each level of education has its own advantages and is suitable for different orientations.
In her personal plan, Quyen plans to complete her college program, then transfer to university to improve her degree before officially starting work.
Support for admission candidates
MSc Vo Cong Tri - Vice Principal of Saigon College of Technology and Tourism - said that after universities announced their admission scores, the number of candidates applying for college admission increased significantly. Many students only decided to change their path after they were certain they would not be admitted to university, especially public or top schools.
According to Mr. Tri, the common psychology of candidates is still to prioritize choosing a university first, often based on initial thoughts and desires rather than thorough research. Therefore, when submitting their applications, they spread out to many different schools. When the results come out, if they are not accepted to the desired school, they begin to reconsider whether to go to university or choose a college or vocational school.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Mong Lanh - Director of the Admissions and Communications Center of Saigon Polytechnic College - said that the school is currently confirming admission for successful candidates through the Ministry of Education and Training's admission portal, expected to be completed before August 30.
In addition, the school continues to accept new students outside the above list. The school has also organized four regular college admission rounds with about 1,000 students and currently has about 200 spots for the final admission round, scheduled to open on September 8.
She added that the school has implemented many support activities to facilitate candidates, from online consultation, text message reminders, to arranging transportation from the bus station to the school to complete admission procedures.
"The school also supports the arrangement of accommodation for candidates. The dormitory management team and the school's youth union coordinate to find accommodation, helping students feel secure when starting the new school year. Tuition procedures are also completed during this period to ensure the enrollment progress is on schedule," said Ms. Lanh.
MSc. Nguyen Thuy Vuong Khanh - Director of the Center for Communication and Admissions, Ho Chi Minh City College of Economics - said that up to now, the number of candidates admitted through the Ministry of Education and Training's admission portal has recorded more than 800 candidates.
Along with this group, the school also implements admission for candidates who register according to the school's own admission method. This is a new point of this year's admission season, when colleges are allowed to organize both forms in parallel.
According to Ms. Khanh, the admission confirmation process via the Ministry of Education and Training's information portal sometimes has a delay or suspension, making processing difficult. To avoid interruptions, the school proactively collects candidates' contact information such as phone numbers and emails, and directly receives necessary documents such as transcripts, temporary exam result certificates, etc.
Currently, about 100-200 candidates come to the school every day to complete admission procedures. This activity is expected to last until August 31, creating conditions for students to have more time to arrange and complete their documents before entering the new school year.
Turn to study abroad
In addition to college, many candidates, despite being admitted to domestic universities, decide not to enroll because their study abroad path has been prepared in advance.
Hoang Minh - a student at a high school in Binh Duong (old) - said he was admitted to the University of Information Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University). However, Minh is not expected to enroll to study abroad in Australia. He still registered for admission "just in case".
"I have been preparing my application since grade 11, focusing on IELTS practice and looking for scholarships. When I received the notice of admission to a domestic university, my family still decided to prioritize studying abroad, because they wanted me to have an international environment from the beginning," Minh shared.
Short, quick, practical
Nguyen Minh Trong, a student at Pham Van Sang High School, was accepted into a private university but decided not to enroll. Instead, Trong chose to study tour guiding at Saigon Tourism College.
Trong likes to study in college because it is short, fast and college at this level focuses more on practice and practical skills. Trong's course will start on September 5 and the program will officially start on September 15.
