According to the acting Tak Bai district police chief, an improvised explosive device (IED), hidden inside a fire extinguisher, exploded outside a gold shop in tambon Chehe area, damaging the front part of the shop.
He noted that a group of unidentified gunmen also opened fire at a security checkpoint about 50 meters away from the gold shop. Seven officers stationed there had to return fire at the attackers, leading to a gun battle that lasted more than 30 minutes.
The gunmen fled into nearby woods. Police later received reports of a roadside bomb that had destroyed a power pole about 200 metres from the checkpoint. They also found an explosive device placed under the pole on the opposite side of the road.
Earlier that day, residents alerted police when they found two more IEDs along the road in tambon Chehe, forcing authorities to cordon off the area. Police were later alerted to another roadside bomb in tambon Khosit in Tak Bai district. The explosion caused 10 electric poles to collapse, temporarily blocking traffic.
Meanwhile, in tambon Muno in Sungai Kolok district of Narathiwat province, Colonel Direk Chomyong, acting chief of Muno police station, informed about two bombings that occurred on the morning of October 21.
Accordingly, a homemade bomb exploded and damaged an electric pole in a village, and a bomb device was discovered hidden in a fire extinguisher under another electric pole.
The incident occurred on the eve of the anniversary of the Tak Bai massacre that took place 19 years ago (October 25, 2004), in which 85 protesters suffocated to death after being arrested and stacked on two military trucks while being transported to a military camp in Pattani province.
