Dilapidated ancient houses in Duong Lam

VnExpressVnExpress29/11/2023

About 50 km from the center of Hanoi , Duong Lam is the first ancient village in Vietnam to be awarded the title of national historical and cultural relic in May 2006. The village still retains most of the basic characteristics of a Vietnamese village with village gates, banyan trees, ferry, communal house yard, pagodas, shrines and especially ancient houses.

Currently, Duong Lam preserves about 90 ancient houses over 100 years old and nearly 1,000 traditional rural houses of the Northern Delta. For ease of management, the authorities divide the ancient houses into two categories. Type one has about 10 houses that still retain the main house, side house, and garden, and are ranked as provincial relics and are introduced to welcome visitors. Type two houses only have the main house, without the accompanying items.

Each type 1 house is supported with 400,000 VND/month and priority is given to repair when it is degraded. Type 2 houses are supported less, so many families are wondering whether to preserve or demolish them due to their increasing degradation.
