The 'keepers of the native language'

BDK - Mentioning the broadcasting industry in Ba Tri district is mentioning a journey full of hardships but also full of pride. There, there were people silently preserving the flow of information during the fierce war years and the early period after liberation. They themselves contributed to writing the enduring and resilient history of the grassroots information industry in the heroic land of Ba Tri.

From the first bricks

Ba Tri district radio, from a simple propaganda tool during the resistance war, has become a close companion of the people throughout the journey of building and developing the homeland. On that journey, the mark of those who lit up the "first wave" is an inseparable part of the history of the district's media. Mr. Nguyen Quang Tri - former Chairman of the Provincial Cultural Heritage Association is a living witness and one of the people who laid the first bricks for the foundation of the district's radio.

Sharing his memories of his career at the meeting to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1925 - June 21, 2025) organized by Ba Tri District Party Committee, Mr. Nguyen Quang Tri said: In 60 years of working, he has been attached to the propaganda sector for 30 years; of which, 9 years worked directly in Ba Tri district. In the late 1960s, when he was Deputy Head of the Subcommittee and then Head of the Press and Information Subcommittee of the District Propaganda Department, he started the first tasks related to communication and propaganda such as: writing news, exploiting information from the grassroots, and conveying it to the people. That was the period when radio, press and propaganda were one, all for the task of informing and encouraging the people's spirit during the resistance war.

According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Tri, at that time, writing a newsletter was not as simple as it is now. He and his teammates had to go to the District Party Committee Office to ask for permission from the District Party Committee Secretary to read the report. After that, they selected and edited the information into an internal newsletter called "Ba Tri District News", only one issue was published each month, sometimes there was not enough information to write. However, they still tried to maintain it until the day of taking over. From many generations of newsletters maintained from the first issue to issue 115 was a silent and persistent journey.

One memory that Mr. Nguyen Quang Tri will always remember is June 29, 1972, when his first article was broadcast on the district radio station about the victory of Xeo Doi, in An Duc commune (a place only about 2 kilometers from Nguyen Dinh Chieu's tomb - PV). That news was not only the first product of an amateur journalist, but also the crystallization of patriotism and the spirit of journalism during wartime. From then on, he began to devote himself more deeply to writing.

When taking over Ba Tri district after liberation, Mr. Nguyen Quang Tri was the first person to take on the position of Head of the district Radio Station. According to the mechanism, the Head of the Propaganda Department also held the position of Head of the station. In the early days, the station only had a few rudimentary equipment, and lacked electricity, but the radio workers were full of enthusiasm. They took turns reading the news, broadcasting local news, and inspiring the revolution to every village and alley.

In the emotional flow at the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Quang Tri did not forget to mention his comrades, contemporaries, who were attached to the first radio waves such as: Mr. Nguyen Van Lam, Minh Tran, Sau Ho, Nam Huong, Nam Dung..., who were not afraid of difficulties and hardships, going to remote areas and base areas to transmit news. From amateur radio workers like Mr. Tri, Ba Tri radio gradually became professional, gradually strengthened in terms of human resources and equipment. The following generations continued that tradition, bringing the voice of Ba Tri closer to the people, from AM to FM waves.

To a team full of passion and courage

In the constant flow of information and innovation, Ba Tri is fortunate to have many generations of dedicated and courageous journalists and radio broadcasters. It is impossible not to mention journalist Minh Tran (Le Minh Tri), from a news writer in Ba Tri district, to becoming the Editor-in-Chief of a provincial newspaper. Journalist Minh Tran expressed his gratitude to the predecessors of Vietnamese journalism in general and Ba Tri journalism in particular, people such as: Suong Nguyet Anh, Bao Luong Nguyen Trung Nguyet... shining examples in times of chaos, who used journalism to enlighten people, to inspire patriotism. Ba Tri, a land of culture, where many patriots and revolutionary journalists were born, is and will continue to be the cradle of dedicated, visionary and responsible journalists.

“In a place with a rich cultural and historical tradition like Ba Tri, journalists need to have courage,” affirmed journalist Minh Tran. Courage to speak the truth, to fight against wrongdoing, to stand with the people. Journalists are not only news reporters, but also leaders, people who spread kindness and fight for what is right.

One of the most mentioned people is Mr. Dang Van Bay - former Head of Ben Tre City Radio Station, who has been associated with the District Radio Station for 21 years from the position of news writer, reporter to station manager. Mr. Bay entered the profession with "empty hands", but with his love for the profession and the dedicated guidance of predecessors such as "Mr. Tam Tri" and "Mr. Tran Van Hoang"... he gradually matured, contributing to building the Ba Tri district radio industry into a more disciplined and professional one.

“Every news broadcast through loudspeakers is the voice of the people, the link between the Party and the people. If I write wrongly or convey incorrectly, it will not only affect the reputation of the industry but also affect the trust of the people,” Mr. Bay shared. It is this sense of responsibility that has helped him maintain his professional ethics and inspire the next generation of reporters.

Another passionate voice comes from the former Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Ba Tri District, Vo Van Lem, who has many years of writing news and articles associated with grassroots propaganda work. For him, June 21 is not only an anniversary but also a time for journalists to look back on the past - a journey where each news line and each photo is a true reflection of life. He emphasized: "Journalism is a profession of words, but behind the words is a great social responsibility. The pen and paper are the sharp weapons of journalists."

Now, when radio and television combine with digital technology , new challenges are not small. But Mr. Nguyen Quang Tri still believes that: If radio workers today know how to "close to the people", know how to listen to life and maintain the bright mind of a professional, they will still have a place in the hearts of the public. According to Mr. Tran Minh Hoang - former Deputy Head of Ba Tri District Radio Station, the press is a close friend of everyone. Press activities are the "lever" to encourage people to successfully implement all policies and resolutions of the Party and State in the current period of building and defending the Fatherland.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Tri advised: “To work in journalism or broadcasting, you must learn foreign languages, read and write seriously, check your writing 3-4 times, then give it to someone else to read to see if it is easy to understand. Most importantly, you must always strive to set an example, reflecting real people and real events.”
