Love is the first medicine
That thought suddenly appeared when the gate of the Male Acute Department - Ha Tinh Mental Health Hospital opened for me to meet the first character in my article. He is Bui Duc Nguyen (born in 1986) - one of the rare male nurses in the Ha Tinh Health sector. I looked at the gentle face of the nurse who had spent a decade working in this special place and thought about the saying "the mind creates the appearance". Perhaps the months of working and healing special patients here have made the gentle features in nurse Bui Duc Nguyen more evident.

In an environment where normal behavioral norms can be disrupted, nurses at Ha Tinh Mental Health Hospital are the silent warriors who keep the cycle of care uninterrupted. Here, patients are not always cooperative, not everyone knows they are being treated. Sometimes they scream, sometimes they panic, sometimes there is terrifying silence. Nurses must listen patiently, handle things calmly and be ready to respond to any situation.
Mr. Nguyen shared: “At first, when I started working here, I was a bit hesitant, but when I approached each patient's situation and talked to them, I understood that here, medicine is not just about medicine but above all, about love. During the process of accompanying the doctors to treat patients, there were many times when I was attacked and cursed for no reason, but I learned to be friends with them, patiently listen to understand and love the patients more. We cannot be afraid because our steadfastness, love, and tolerance are the first medicine for the patients.”

There is a place that if I had not come to listen to their stories, I would not have known that this is such a special medical environment. That is the Pediatrics Department - Provincial General Hospital. Here, the first means of communication of the second character in the article - nurse Nguyen Thi Le Xuan - is tears. She was in tears because a few days ago, a patient's family member, out of confusion, misunderstood and "exposed" the nurses and doctors of the department online when they brought their child for treatment.
Ms. Xuan said: “This is not the first time, so I just feel a little hurt. Here, we work not only with expertise and professionalism but also with our hearts, so nothing can extinguish our passion and responsibility.”

In the Pediatrics Department, patients are babies who do not fully understand the pain of their bodies, and cannot fully describe their medical conditions, so nurses must be close, observe, and grasp the psychology and expressions of patients meticulously to report to the doctor; nurses are also the patients' relatives to comfort and soothe them... Sometimes, each injection, each infusion is a tearful "negotiation". Therefore, nurses here cannot work with just their skills, they must have the heart of a mother, a relative.
“Previously, our department only accepted patients with common illnesses such as cough, fever, pneumonia, diarrhea, etc., but as the hospital developed, the department also accepted emergency patients after surgery, premature patients, trauma patients requiring ventilators, etc. That requires us to always improve our skills and especially to always nurture our love for patients, not letting any difficulties fade away,” Ms. Xuan shared.

Born in 1977, with 24 years of experience in the profession, 21 of which were in the Pediatrics Department, Ms. Xuan cannot remember how many patients she has taken care of; cannot remember how many sleepless nights she has spent holding patients in her arms, massaging them to warm them up to get their veins; cannot remember how many times she had to calm herself down to calmly get veins for emergency patients... For her, in the work of a Pediatrics nurse, the ability to get veins is the most important because in any emergency, the patient must have their veins taken before other treatment steps can be carried out. And, she not only takes veins by technique but in many cases, she has to take them by the special feeling of an experienced nurse.
For nurses in special environments, each time a patient is discharged, the joy is greater; each time they witness a patient’s “life-or-death” moment, it is even more heartbreaking. In such environments, they work with love and dedication. That is the special “medicine” that modern medicine cannot replace.
Improve your skills to be more dedicated
In recent years, the Vietnamese Nursing industry has made new developments in all four areas: Practice, management, training and scientific research.
If in the past, the training of nurses at primary and intermediate levels was mainly focused on, now the Ministry of Health is paying attention to training a team of nurses with college, university, specialist I, and master's degrees.
Along with the development of the national nursing system, the nursing team of Ha Tinh province has made important contributions in providing quality health care services and aiming at people's satisfaction.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang (born in 1978) - Head Nurse, Traditional Medicine Department - Ha Tinh Rehabilitation Hospital shared: "Currently, nurses are no longer "people who follow doctor's orders" but must be care experts. To do that, we must learn and update continuously, especially in an environment with patients who need rehabilitation, we must also be "warriors" who spread motivation. In the position of a Head Nurse of the Department, I have many opportunities to learn, improve my qualifications and propose training plans, improve skills for the nursing team and technicians of the department".

Currently, in Ha Tinh, the nursing team accounts for about 60% of the total medical workforce, of which over 95% have college degrees or higher, 30% have university degrees. Master Nguyen Viet Thang - Chairman of the Ha Tinh Nursing Association said: “In the past time, the nursing team in Ha Tinh has overcome difficulties, taking advantage of the opportunity to standardize qualifications. At the same time, the nursing team also has good style and attitude, increasing the satisfaction index of patients. Our hotline has not recorded any negative feedback about the attitude of nurses. I am always proud of the team of nurses working in special medical environments, they have all the noble qualities of ethics, intelligence and aesthetics, becoming a miraculous "medicine" for patients".
Quietly and unobtrusively, the work of nurses is not always seen or fully understood, but with the spirit of a "mother", they are always patient with their profession. They not only take care of patients but also heal physical and mental injuries with love for the profession and a kind heart: " ... The hands are so gentle / You take away hundreds of thousands of worries / Step out to leave instructions / Step in to erase sadness for people ...".
