During the 1975 Spring General Offensive and Uprising, after the acupoint blow of Buon Ma Thuot, we quickly liberated the Central Highlands, Hue, Da Nang and most of the coastal provinces of the Central region, creating an isolated position, threatening Saigon - Gia Dinh and the remaining lands of the Eastern and Western regions of the South of the Saigon government.
To stop the advance of the Liberation Army, the US and the Saigon government concentrated their remaining strength to establish a defense line stretching from Phan Rang through Xuan Loc to Tay Ninh; in which, Xuan Loc was the key point to protect Saigon - Gia Dinh.
The Saigon government dubbed Xuan Loc the “steel door” and declared that it would “defend to the death” at all costs. Many Western newspapers at that time commented that “Xuan Loc is the final vortex” that would decide the fate of the Saigon regime.

In the enemy's plan to defend Saigon - Gia Dinh, Xuan Loc was a "crucial link". The US Army Chief of Staff, General Frederick C. Weyand, personally went to Xuan Loc to inspect and emphasized: "Must keep Xuan Loc, losing Xuan Loc means losing Saigon".
To turn Xuan Loc into a "steel door", the enemy deployed a strong force here including: the intact 18th Infantry Division, a ranger regiment, an armored regiment, nine security battalions, defending in solid fortifications.

Assessing the importance of Xuan Loc gateway, on April 2, 1975, thoroughly implementing the guiding ideology of the Politburo and the Central Military Commission, the Regional Command decided to launch an attack to liberate Xuan Loc. After a period of urgent preparation, on the morning of April 9, our troops opened fire to launch the campaign.
From April 9 to 14, we concentrated our forces and directly attacked the town many times but could not completely eliminate the target. In a desperate situation, the enemy fought back strongly and sent reinforcements. In addition, the enemy's air force was active, using many types of bombs with great destructive power to attack the attacking formation.
From April 15 to 20, the Party Committee and the 4th Corps Command reorganized their forces and changed their fighting style. We did not directly attack the town (where the enemy troops were concentrated and had a solid defense), but instead switched to destroying the enemy units that were counterattacking and had not yet firmly established themselves on the outer perimeter; at the same time, we occupied the Dau Giay intersection, blocking Highway 1 and traffic routes leading to Xuan Loc. Artillery and special forces of the Region continuously bombarded Bien Hoa airport, limiting the activities of the enemy air force.
Xuan Loc town was completely surrounded and isolated. By April 20, the leading force of our 2nd Corps, after smashing the enemy's "steel shield" in Phan Rang (April 16), advanced to the Rung La area (nearly 20km from Xuan Loc), ready to coordinate with the 4th Corps to attack Xuan Loc. Facing the risk of being completely annihilated, the enemy troops in Xuan Loc fled. On April 21, after 12 days and nights, we completely liberated Xuan Loc town and Long Khanh province.

On the evening of the liberation of Xuan Loc, Nguyen Van Thieu had to resign as President of the Republic of Vietnam, and Tran Van Huong took his place in the context of the increasing panic throughout Saigon as the American evacuation campaign was being carried out at a very urgent pace.
The very next day, April 22, the Party Committee and the Ho Chi Minh Campaign Command approved and officially approved the plan to attack and liberate Saigon-Gia Dinh.
