On August 19, information from Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital, Hai Phong city, said that the unit had just successfully performed surgery to reattach a severed thumb for a patient, a police major, who was injured while on duty.
Previously, on August 17, at the gate of Drug Rehabilitation Center No. 1, Bach Dang Ward, Hai Phong City, a number of people gathered, causing insecurity and disorder.
Major Pham Van Thang, an officer of the Target Protection Police Team - Mobile Police Department of the City Police, was on duty reminding, propagating, and mobilizing the subjects to stop causing trouble. He was injured by a subject in the group causing trouble with a weapon.
Major Pham Van Thang was hospitalized with a completely severed right thumb, loss of movement and heavy bleeding, at risk of permanent loss of hand function.
Doctors at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital urgently cleaned the wound, stopped the bleeding and performed microsurgery to reattach the finger.
The surgery took place over 6 hours, with the coordination of many specialist teams including: vascular, orthopedic trauma, microsurgery, plastic surgery and neurology.
Doctors performed bone fixation, tendon suturing, vascular revascularization, nerve restoration, skin suturing and shaping, and compression bandage - splint to keep the finger in a stable position to create optimal conditions for the recovery process.
After surgery, the severed thumb on the patient's right hand has been successfully reattached, the finger is pink again, has capillary blood, is gradually warming up and is able to recover movement and sensation during monitoring. The patient is awake, breathing on his own, and has stable pulse and blood pressure.
Thanks to the smooth coordination, solid expertise and modern equipment, the patient's fingers were reattached and circulation was restored, preserving the shape and function of the hand.
According to Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh, Head of the Department of Treatment on Demand, Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital, "This is a complicated trauma case. The successful preservation and reattachment not only requires the coordination of many specialized teams and a race against time. After 6 hours of continuous surgery, we were able to restore circulation, movement and sensation to the finger. This is a very positive sign and opens up the opportunity to restore almost normal hand function for the patient."
Previously, Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital has successfully performed limb reattachment surgery for many cases. After surgery, patients are combined with rehabilitation and can walk and move normally.
Recently, on August 7, the hospital also successfully performed surgery to reattach the severed left forearm of a 35-year-old male patient./.
