The guava gardens laden with fruit of the Son Tien General Agricultural Service Cooperative, Son Tien Commune, Huong Son District (Ha Tinh Province) directed by Mr. Nguyen Duy Sinh are grown according to VietGAP standards for healthy trees and delicious fruit. Anyone who eats them once will want to order more.
Strange guava variety, produces super large fruit
Mr. Nguyen Duy Sinh was born and raised in Son Tien commune, Huong Son district (Ha Tinh), and witnessed his hometown with its vast hilly land potential but difficulties in agricultural production. This place is mainly hilly gardens, sloping land, often eroded after floods, so developing crops with economic value for the people is not easy.

Worrying a lot about the path of sustainable economic development for the locality, after a period of research and study visits to many places. In 2020, Mr. Sinh boldly invested more than 100 million VND to import 230 Taiwanese guava trees from Hung Yen to plant on an area of 1,500m2 .
The guava trees that he diligently cared for quickly bore fruit. The first batch of guavas harvested were delicious, crispy and sweet, not letting the growers down, further motivating Mr. Nguyen Duy Sinh to expand the scale of production development. In 2021, he expanded the garden area to 3,000m2 , and his annual income also gradually increased.

After a period of research, Mr. Nguyen Duy Sinh realized the great economic potential of the guava growing model. In July 2023, Mr. Sinh made a breakthrough when he established the Son Tien Agricultural Cooperative, of which he was the director, with 10 members contributing capital. The Cooperative continues to pursue the profession of growing Taiwanese pear guava and supplying seedlings to the people.
Up to now, Son Tien Agricultural Cooperative has 5 hectares of Taiwanese guava, of which 2 hectares have been harvested, bringing stable income to members. The Cooperative also regularly provides the market with quality products, trusted by customers.

Mr. Nguyen Duy Sinh shared: "In the past, people in this area often grew jackfruit and oranges, but the soil here was poor in nutrients, the trees became increasingly stunted, so few people cared about taking care of them, and they seemed to be abandoned. Therefore, in the early stages of cultivation, we focused on adding nutrients to the soil by fertilizing with compost and biofertilizer to make the soil loose. Each year, each tree is fertilized with a maximum of 40 kg of compost. At the same time, we planted additional trees around it to prevent erosion and keep the soil moist."
According to Mr. Sinh's experience, to have guava fruit all year round, it is necessary to regularly prune, shape the canopy and pinch the top to stimulate flowering. When shaping the canopy, the guava tree should be maintained at a height of 2 - 2.5 m, the tree will have many branches and help harvest conveniently and reduce labor. The planting density of each tree is 2.5 - 3 m so that the tree has enough ventilation, is well-rounded and absorbs nutrients well, produces a lot of fruit, and at the same time limits pests and diseases.
Earn hundreds of millions per year
Depending on age, care conditions, and growing environment, Taiwanese pear guava can yield different yields. After more than 5 years of planting this guava variety, the guava tree has adapted well and has a fairly high yield. Newly planted trees, 1-2 years old, yield 5-10 kg/tree/year; trees, 3-5 years old, yield 30-50 kg of fruit/tree/year.

Taiwanese pear guava trees also face some pests such as anthracnose, fruit borers, and fruit flies. When the fruit is as big as a lemon, members of the cooperative use paper bags or specialized plastic bags to cover the fruit, helping to limit pests and protect the appearance of the fruit. Using guava bags also helps limit the use of pesticides, not only creating safe products but also contributing to protecting the ecological environment.

Picking a bunch of guavas, Mr. Nguyen Duy Sinh was even more excited when the Taiwanese pear guava variety grown on the hilly garden soil had beautiful appearance, large, even fruit, bright color, especially the sweeter taste than grown elsewhere, so many customers who bought it once wanted to buy it again. Therefore, the output is currently very favorable, as soon as the fruit is harvested, it is sold out. The price of guava in the garden ranges from 25,000 - 30,000 VND/kg.
Currently, in addition to growing guava, the cooperative also supplies seedlings of 50 types with high economic value such as: mango, Son La plum, Hung Yen lychee, black canarium, Thai jackfruit, etc. On average, the income of each cooperative member is from 150 - 200 million VND/year. Mr. Sinh's family currently owns more than 1 hectare of Taiwanese guava, with an income of no less than 500 million VND/year.

Talking to PV Dan Viet, Mr. Hoang Huy Hieu - Vice Chairman of Son Tien commune assessed: "The model of growing Taiwanese pear guava is suitable for the production conditions here, opening up a new direction in transforming the crop structure in the locality. In addition to supporting and creating conditions for cooperatives to develop the economy and build product brands, in the coming time, the local government will encourage local people to continue to eliminate mixed gardens and convert garden and hill land to grow guava, coordinate with specialized units to strengthen technical training to create commodity products, facilitate consumption linkages, thereby creating jobs, increasing income, contributing to the socio-economic development of the locality".
"From the beginning, we have applied the production process according to VietGAP standards. In 2024, the guava product of the Cooperative was recognized as a 3-star OCOP product with the Mai Sinh guava brand known to many stalls, supermarkets and consumers. This is a great motivation for the Cooperative to continue to develop and expand its scale, continue to convert guava cultivation completely according to natural, organic methods, without using chemicals or chemical fertilizers to ensure the quality of guava fruit, in order to turn this place into a place for agricultural production to adapt to green transformation" , Mr. Nguyen Duy Sinh revealed.
