Farmers in Dong Thap Muoi region plow flooded land to welcome alluvium |
In low-lying communes such as Vinh Dai, Vinh Chau A, Vinh Buu... (Tan Hung district, Long An province), flood water has overflowed into the fields, and farmers are urgently plowing the flooded land.
According to local households, every year after harvesting the summer-autumn rice crop, people wait for the floodwaters to rise before cleaning the fields. This method not only helps to remove acidity, wash away alum, and cut off the transmission of diseases, but also makes the soil loose and increases fertility thanks to the amount of alluvium from the floodwaters from upstream.
Mr. Tran Thanh Bay (Nhon Hoa Lap commune, Tan Thanh district, Long An province) said that to prevent pests and diseases on rice, many farmers have used excessive pesticides, causing an imbalance in the ecosystem. In addition, continuous rice production (3 crops/year) makes the soil infertile, so it is necessary to plow and flood the land to wash away toxins in the soil, kill weeds, rice husks, decompose straw, etc.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Long An province recommends that farmers take advantage of plowing, letting water soak in the flood, and receiving alluvium, paying special attention to the fields located in the dike system. This is a simple but very effective method, helping farmers successfully produce the winter-spring rice crop.
