Quang Ninh agriculture recovers and develops

Việt NamViệt Nam11/12/2024

In 2024, the Quang Ninh agricultural sector began implementing its tasks with a favorable start. However, Typhoon Yagi, which made landfall in Quang Ninh on September 7, caused severe damage to this sector, wiping out the great achievements it had previously built. Faced with the damage caused by Typhoon No. 3, Quang Ninh promptly had appropriate leaders and directions and implemented solutions that were accurate and correct, as well as actively accompanying the people and businesses of the entire political system. Thanks to that, Quang Ninh's agricultural production in the fourth quarter had significant movements and recovery, contributing to making the picture of Quang Ninh agriculture in 2024 bright and green again and new opportunities appearing.

In 2024, the total cultivated area of the province is estimated to reach nearly 62,600 hectares, the output of grain crops is 212,000 tons; the total herd of livestock and poultry is over 6 million, the meat output is over 103,000 tons; the forest area is 15,300 hectares, the timber output is 1.2 million m3; the total aquatic product output is 166,000 tons, of which 77,000 tons are exploited and 89,000 tons are farmed. The GRDP growth rate of the agricultural, forestry and fishery sector of Quang Ninh in 2024 is 0.04%, escaping negative growth.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Son, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Ninh, said: The results of Quang Ninh agriculture up to this point have not been as expected, however, in the specific context, it is the result of great efforts from the government, specialized units, localities, especially the efforts of each enterprise, cooperative producing, processing, consuming agriculture as well as the efforts of each farming household...

Storm No. 3 caused Quang Ninh agriculture to lose over 10,000 billion VND, all forestry, aquaculture, livestock and crop production activities were damaged, some activities were almost paralyzed. However, in the storm, the internal strength of Quang Ninh agriculture was promoted. Only a short time after the storm, many very important policies of the province on agricultural support, which could not be done before, were promptly proposed and implemented synchronously. Along with that, each agricultural production, processing and business household was proactive in overcoming difficulties, recovering and developing production. Particularly, the group of households engaged in aquaculture promoted the spirit of "self-rescue" before waiting for support from others, mobilizing all remaining resources for reproduction.

Mr. Dao Van Vu, Vice Chairman of Van Don District People's Committee, said: Van Don District is the first locality in the province to hand over sea water to aquaculture households for peace of mind in production. This activity had previously been carried out in some basic steps, but it was only after storm No. 3 that it was accelerated, thereby providing very practical support to aquaculture households damaged by the storm.

As of December 10, Van Don had nearly 2,000 aquaculture households reinforcing and upgrading farming infrastructure, over 1,200 households had added aquatic breeds, the water surface area of Van Don aquaculture households reproducing was nearly 9,000 hectares, higher than before the storm. Quang Yen aquaculture area, which was also heavily damaged in storm No. 3, also resumed production very quickly. Mong Cai, Hai Ha, Dam Ha, Tien Yen, and Cam Pha aquaculture areas were all stable and developed production more than before.

Also after storm No. 3, Quang Ninh entered the winter crop production with a stronger spirit than previous years, aiming to use the output and value of the winter crop to partly compensate for the damage of storm No. 3, promote agricultural production in 2024 and at the same time create momentum for agricultural production in 2025. Accordingly, starting from October, Quang Ninh farmers focused on growing winter crops, focusing on high-value crops such as flowers, ornamental plants, vegetables, corn, potatoes of all kinds, etc.; developing Tien Yen chicken flocks and raising winter shrimp in very large numbers to meet the demand for the Lunar New Year. Notably, tens of thousands of forest planting households have prepared planting areas, seedlings, fertilizers, pesticides and human resources to be ready for the first forest planting season of the year.

New opportunities lie ahead

The strong production momentum in the last months of 2024 is expected to create momentum and driving force for Quang Ninh agriculture in 2025. Mr. Tran Van Thuc, Head of the provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, said: January 2025 is the time to harvest some key winter crops, of which corn alone is expected to achieve an output 1,000 tons higher than the previous winter crop. Along with that, livestock and aquatic product output consumed during and after the Lunar New Year also contributed to the growth in the first quarter of 2025. This is a good momentum for agriculture in 2025, the year starting the recovery after major natural disasters.

Mr. Phan Thanh Nghi, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Ninh, said that in the third quarter of 2025, new oysters released after storm No. 3 will be harvested, contributing significantly to the aquatic product output of 2025. More importantly, through the activities of aquatic product reconstruction, the recent assignment of sea areas and standardization of floating materials for aquaculture will help aquatic product production in 2025 be large-scale, strict, in accordance with standards and planning, moving towards a stable, sustainable and higher value business model.

It can be seen that after the difficulties, the agricultural production sector of Quang Ninh is showing encouraging signs. This is the basis and foundation for setting the agricultural production target for 2025 to reach 215,900 tons of grain output, a total herd of 5.8 million livestock and poultry and 103,000 tons of fresh meat output, 31,800 hectares of new forests, 1 million m3 of timber exploitation from planted forests, and a total aquatic product output of 174,000 tons, of which 77,000 tons are exploited and 97,000 tons are farmed.
