On June 6, Military Hospital 175 ( Ministry of National Defense ) announced that it had received and treated a patient with a rare blood disease.
The patient is NTTH (17 years old, Ho Chi Minh City). A week before being admitted to the hospital, the patient had hemorrhagic spots on both thighs and calves, spreading throughout the body, accompanied by chest pain and difficulty breathing.
The patient was brought to the emergency room in a state of very severe anemia.
After performing extensive tests, doctors determined that the patient had primary Evans syndrome - a rare autoimmune disorder that causes the body to produce antibodies that attack blood cells such as red blood cells, platelets and sometimes white blood cells.
After 11 days of active treatment, hematological indicators improved significantly, the patient was discharged from the hospital, continued to be monitored as an outpatient and had regular check-ups with stable health.
According to Dr. Mai Thi Thu Ly - Department of Clinical Hematology and Occupational Diseases, Military Hospital 175, Evans syndrome is one of the rare and complex autoimmune hematological diseases, accounting for only about 7% of autoimmune hemolytic cases and 2% of immune thrombocytopenia cases.
The disease has dramatic clinical manifestations, progresses rapidly and can easily cause serious complications if not detected early.
What are the symptoms of Evans syndrome?
Dr. Thu Ly said Evans syndrome is a rare autoimmune disorder that occurs when the body produces antibodies that simultaneously attack red blood cells (causing hemolysis), platelets (causing bleeding), and sometimes white blood cells (causing immunodeficiency).
The disease can appear alone or in association with systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjogren's syndrome, lymphoproliferation...
Common symptoms include: pale skin, fatigue, jaundice, subcutaneous bleeding, bleeding gums, fever, and persistent infection. The liver and spleen may be enlarged.
